Replace or REPLACE! (BJ40)

Post by Chump »

Hi guys!

Just found this awesome site, gotta tell all my mates about it!

Quick question for you all.

The head gasket has just blown in my old '79 bj40, the old B motor.

I have access to a '79 4L diesel with 4sp gearbox for $2000

Shall i fork out the 2k and replace the B with the 4L or just fix the head gasket??

Which one will be the easiest to do? I know the 4L would be awesome but will it be a pain to install???

Whats a head gasket worth? Surely it would be quicker and easier to replace the gasket instead of doing a transplant.
How easy would it be to get it roadworthy with the 6cyl instead of the 4cyl?
Where the f#@k did that come from

Yeah, haven't checked on the cost of the gasket yet, just hoping that the head isn't screwed.....

Here in SA you are allowed to go 30% larger engine size in your car than what the original largest engine size was that came with that model before having to produce it to the road transport guys for inspection.

Therefore since they came out with the 4.2l petrols you don't need to go through all the legal stuff

I guess ill just have to wait and see how much it will cost once the head comes off....still wouldn't mind some advice just incase i decide to go with the 4L.....

for a B, just the gasket i think was $25 and an entire engine gasket kit for top and bottom was $80 or so. And its not a big job to just replace the gasket if the head is allright. New Head is $850 if thats stuffed too, new valves ~$50 for the lot if they are stuffed.

dropping in new engine - whole shitload of work, has more power, but the B really isn't that far behind, may even be faster off the line, just not up the hill.

i would look at a 11-14B, i priced a 14B today at $3000 outright with no exchange. I my mind it would be alot better than the B or the H you are looking at. You could always turbo it later.

also if you are going to change to a H/2H you will need to change the bellhousing and input shaft on your transmission, which requires complete disassembly of the transmission, so it is probably cheaper and easier to get a 2H complete with gearbox and transfercase.

unless you're prepared to throw buckets of money at it, fix up the B.
