G'day Corky, you don't say if your NG is a 2.6 or 3.0 V6 ??
You should be able to pick up a 2nd hand clutch pack lsd from a local Mitsu wrecker.
Try Imlachs in Clayton - 9552-1999 they should certainly have one but they are the most expensive but it will be less than $750 maybe around $400.
When in 4x4 the front wheels are locked to the driveshafts via your auto hubs (unless you have the manual type).
The front diff is open (no lsd or locker as standard) and if one wheel looses traction and spins the other will not move at all.
Are you absolutely sure that the rear diff hasn't got an lsd ??
The reason I ask is that by the NG model they were standard equipment.
I would check that first before you buy one. It may turn out you do have one but it's just not working and may need the clutch packs re-shimmed to tighten it back up.

If you have the lsd on the US models then you have a warning sticker that is on the driver side door jam. It is a long rectangle, orange, and it warns of spining a tire with the other one on the ground.
Also my diff fill plug had a sticker that said lsd on it, I guess so you didnt put in the wrong fluid.

Hi guys,
Yeh i suppose a bit more detail.
3.0 V6 Auto (so my other half can drive it) and i beleive the diff gears are 4.625 going by the factory manual.
I did some mud climbing the other day and wondering other peoples opinion on getting better grip.
Would the LSD help - yes i know the tires are the biggest thing and will be getting some good mud tires later but besides that would the LSD help in the rear.
I watched our video and the front two wheels always seem to spin (are they locked ???) there is a wheel lock light that comes on the dash does that mean it locks the front or locks the transfer case ???
sorry for all the questions - i am very new to offroad driving and have just got this paj .. was cheap and in good nick !!
Thanks for the input so far

The standard Mitsi LSD is a "ramp" style which works better with some load - if one wheel has zero traction the other wheel gets very little drive. If you're stuck in mud the LSD can appear to be an open diff - I speak from experience. Using the handbrake to load up the spinning wheel (2 or 3 clicks if adjusted properly) can tighten the diff nicely, and allow you to drive out. Give it a try before you spend too much money.
For checking: Doug is right about the orange sticker and tag on the diff - although mine is missing the tag on the diff. Whip the back off the diff and look for the clutch packs? The official Mitsi procedure is to jack one wheel up and measure the torque required to turn the wheel (using special Mitsubishi tool... ) 35Nm plus indicates a good LSD (or really bad bearings. )
Cheers,
Scott

Thanks for that NJ SWB - sorry for the ignorance here ... but if i do get a STD LSD it may not help that much ... unless i use that very handy handbrake trick u mentioned.
The current diff i have is std open wheeler ..not lsd .... what does everyone think i should do to get more mud traction at a reasonable cost
of course air locker seems the best way to go ..... but $1900 isnt :(
cheers again

Don't write off the LSD too quickly - if you can get one for a decent price (you'll have to decide what constitutes "decent") the benefits to off-road performance are significant. To me, the best part is that its "on" all the time - no "on or off?" decision to make before tackling something.
If you're handy with tools the air locker can be had for less. Maybe $1200 (or less, depending on negotiating skills ) for the locker, less for second hand (if you can find one...) Then you need an air compressor, tank, pressure switch and solenoid valve. Careful shopping should get that for less than $200 - and if you look at the compressor as an off-roading "essential" for pumping your tyres up, it isn't part of the locker cost.
If you remove the diff yourself you should be able to find somebody to do the actual locker install for $100 - $150. Or you can DIY if you're really confident.
Still not beer money, but you'll save enough for a signifcant deposit on the front locker.
Cheers,
Scott

Hi Corkhead,
if you want a locker type of diff you may want to consider a Lokka / Lock Rite. I've got an NG with an LSD on the back (which works great by the way) and am putting the lokka on the front.
Here's some info on it:
http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/lokka.htm
I think they are about $600 new + $30 for postage. The only issue with it will be the installation.

Well, just spent the weekend out in the bush with the new lokka installed. Let me just say that it makes an awesome difference to the car. Totally astounded me what it can do with relative ease now.
Well worth the $$ for the performance gain.
On a side note - The installation is a bugger of a job - takes absolutely ages!

Parts not right.
Have got the diff out and installed the LOKKA inside, mine came with absolutely no instructions and i went by the small guide on the NET and a great mate who is an expert diff welder not that i wanted that on my vehicle !
going by there online guides to clearances and gap distances id say it is installed correctly - will be calling 4wd systems today to see if they can fax through any info to check for before putting back in.
the big drama is though (and the main reason i am calling them) is that the cross shaft on the LOKKA is 4mm longer then stock - which makes the crown gear impossible to put back on
any input from anyone else would be great .. i hope the boys at 4wd systems are good ...
also doing a lot of reading ... these LOKKAS are alright with AUTO front hubs arent they ????

Looks like a few of us put front locks in on the weekend.
Replaced my entire front diff with Franks old Detroit on Saturday without any problems. Removed and cleaned upper control arms and put in new top ball joints and gave all the other bushes a good greasing. Went and played on Sunday.
Farking awesome.
With ARB Air locker in the back and the detroit in the front the car felt more balanced. In hind sight the front locker is the one I should have put in first. Makes a way bigger difference than the rear did. Steering is heavier and tends to pull sideways (this could be due to no alignment as yet) but the benefits are huge.
Hopefully there should be some good photos to post.

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading
The more Paj's running around with front lockers the better
It makes a massive difference offroad and is more of an improvement than adding a rear locker.
The 4wd Systems Lokka has been advertised for years, I ordered one 3 years ago and they are just now available
I had the Detroit fitted in the meantime and never looked back.
I hope Tom looked after you guys.....................
I think they left their run a bit late now with the ARB's available they would have sold heaps if they were around 3 years ago.
Still for the price they are a cheap option.
I would definitely be changing to manual hubs (from the auto hubs) to run a front auto-locker.

Well 4wd systems are certainly not letting me down,
sending me out the correct shaft tomorrow (we were going to grind it down last night - i thought id wait to speak to them first) and putting in the proper instructions - but im confident we have got it right so far.
Cant wait to try this out and get some good mud tyres !!!! hopefully i will be out playing this weekend - come on the rain !!!
thanks for all the comments and input guys !!!
love this site now apparantley 4wd systems dont do a rear lokka yet for these babies .. so im still hunting for that LSD if anyone needs to depart with one
