Wirrrrring sound - 95 Lux, solid axle.
Hi All,
When I reach around 60km per hour a wirring noise kicks in, sounds like it is coming from toward the rear........ It also seems to occur only under load, that is, if I take my foot off the accelerator it goes away and if I drop back down to say 40 kms per hour it goes away............ I am stumped. It is like the sound only occurs at a certain vibration frequency or something.
Any thoughts? The truck is lifted around 2.5 inches and running 32inch tyres, has fresh diff oil and just greased the unis (not sure how to check for play though............................)
Diff? Tailshaft balance? Unis?

Try it all.
To check your uni`s lay under the car on your back and try to push the tail shaft up and down if it moves seems loose near the uni`s you may need new uni`s. As for the center bearing i not sure how to check these`s so can some one explain how as i`d like to check mine aswell
2001 100 series stock as a rock
whir!!!
hey wilamber......just had to replace all uni splines....3 weeks ago...same sound.. again get the rig and have a look at the splines and there are little surclips that hold the uni centers in place if the joints buggered these will be worn...if u can see that take one end..say the one from diff flange off and make sure the uni moves freely and with rough or stiff move ment if its as described above replace the centers...around 50-70 bucks
cheers

I had a similar noise in the front of my 60 series (so far front it sounded like the fan was rubbing) when I was gutsing up one of the hills at rover park a few weeks ago. As with your issue it stopped when I eased off.. I had heard the noise a few times and it was definatly louder the harder I drove.
I already had my car booked in to have a lokka fitted (good thing I chose the front).. My diff was well out so it went off to the diff lappers who noticed some irregularities in the pinion seating/alignment. They reckon this could probably be the cause of the noise.. My diff had been reconned before I owned it and aparently the work was not too good.
I sure hope this was the cause, I'm off for 2 weeks holidays soon and I am feeling a lot better now the mechanic has had it all apart. Just got her back so its time to get her dirty this weekend hopefully she wont cry when I drive her hard again.
Good Luck..
