Engine Options

Post by 85zook »

Looking into doing something about my gutless motor.

Got a quote the other day to completely rebuild the original G13A with 243,000k's on the clock. Inc. rebore, new pistons, bearings, rings, head hardening cause its a bit soft, hardened valve seats to run unleaded, fully reconditioned head etc. I thought while go half arsed and why not wack in a performance cam and a 32/36mm weber while im at it. Total cost, drive in drive out, $3145

The other option im leaning towards is the much revered G16B 1.6 EFI conversion. Not to sure how much to expect to pay for this though. Ive heard that a good motor can be picked up for around $2000 and about another grand to install. Does this sound about right? Im definitely giving this a good thought but if its going to cost alot more than a rebuild i wont do it.

Or maybe the Swift Gti G13B DOHC EFI donk? I would expect this to cost more for the engine than the 1.6 due to its cult status. Am i right in assuming this? Is it a hassle to put one of these in a zook?

Cheers for your help guys,
Aido

Ouch :? Still a carby as well  Will go pretty well but probably lose some low down grunt to get the power

Import halfcuts with low k's can be had well below 2k ;) Sell off some bits you don't need and recoup some costs :) Don't know the cost of install though sorry

Why would it lose lown down grunt? And by grunt do you mean power or torwue?

Generally performance cams move the torque peak to higher in the rev range. For our application we are better off having our torque down low in the rev range.

This is also the reason most people prefer the 1600 over the GTi.

spending $3000 on rebuilding a 1300 is a lot of money for not much of a gain. for that sort of money you could go a fuel injected 1300 from a Jimny which gives you the benefit of more power plus fuel injection

Not fitted and wired properly though Grimbo.

I would go an EFI 1.6 for a good outcome that is not breaking any new ground.

true but if he is willing spend over $3000 on a 1.3 then spend $3000 on a late model efi one

But I agree that a 1.6 is a better option

PS in regard to the GTI motor, they are fairly cheap (motor only... I think just under $1k) but they have a straight rather than right angle distributor drive. I have heard things like "yeah we can get angled drives to suit sierras but they are custom made etcetetc $530. Otherwise with the stright dizzy drive you have to cut through the firewall into the area inhabited by the ventilation fan  or move the motor WAY forward.

Sure the GTi is a 100hp motor, but they do lack a bit of bottom end torque. Also, many of these (ie the cheap ones) will be getting quite old now, as the early ones are an 86-87 vintage?

I would either go EFI 1.6 or jimny, personally, I don' t think there is much point doing anything else. I would lean towards the jimny as it is newer and is not a "conversion" per se in that is a bolt in, but I am a bit perverse like that ( I put the 660cc turbo motor in Greg's 1.3 so pay me no attention when it comes to increasing capacity)

Bear in mind that depending onthe regs in your state, you may need an engineers report even for the Jimny motor, as even though it bolts in it is over 10% more powerful than the stocker.
