What tyres to choose?

Post by TUFFRANGIE »

Hi all, soon i will need a new set of tyres, not sure what to choose, currently have 33in bfg muddies(old style) i do a fair bit of offroading that is medium rated sometimes hard however the car is also my daily driver. Should i go another set of muddies or some at's and save up for simex (which could take a very long time)
I am leaning towards xterrains for time being and saving up for simex as well

Nissan Patrol SWB GQ
suspension and body lift etc..

I have, and so have others looked into the XTerrains only to find limited stock which means they are not readily avail, and in the event that one gets damaged, replacing it quickly may pose dramas, Thats there only downfall though.
I drove round Oz with STT Coopers and had no dramas with them and rekon they OK.
All terrains are to Soft
So I voted BFG Muds as Ive had em before and had no dramas, both on and off road.
80 series, Locked both ends, Q78ed & a massive 57 k/w to boot!!!!

You should add MTR's. and scrap AT's

Radial Claws. :D I drive on them everyday and have done comps on them, towed my rig interstate on them. A good tuff tyre and I have used most, also price is V-good. :D

how do the radial claws go on the road though? If possible can you rate them comparatively to bfg muddies so i can get an idea. I would imagine they are equal or similar in the dry and slightly worse in the wet, but i could be wrong

thanks cheezy

IMO I think better in both cases, also they are a very balanced tyre, I have done 20,000 km on mine and I still havnt balanced them. Come down to work and I will take you for a spin, road and dirt

when i have some spare time, maybe friday i might take you up on that offer cheezy, thanks

My mate has the silverstones on his 40 series, i am pretty impressed with them offroad so far but would like something a bit different thanks big red toy.

With the mtr i am a bit concerned that they won't be good enough in the mud for me cos i like sliperyness  this maybe just a misconception though

tyres

Post by Pesky Pete »

Last set of MTR's lasted 80,000kms and I drove them fairly hard off road. At 80,000 they were pretty farked and had been virtually usesless offroad for the past 20 - 30k.

I'd say they are a good alround tyre, and very suited to daily driving and weekend work. I have just bought some swampers for offroad and am about to by some AT's for road and dirt.

I dont know what kind of wheeling you do, but 1 set just didnt cut it for me. I wanted a very agressive tyre (and the MTR just didnt quite cut it) and another set for the beach, desert, forestry trails etc that also worked well on the road. I'd at least consider 2 sets

Yet you added AT's to the Poll? You think AT's would be better than MTR's?

Xterrains are good sh!t I'm very happy with mine. Yes they are directional but you don't need 2 spares just a std mud for a spare :?

I'll probably give radial claws a go next in a larger size and keep the x terrains for road/ beach :)

Don't know how they'll go, but I bought a set of 'Buckshot Maxxis Mudders' in 35". Main reason I chose these is 'cause we do alot of bitchie km's, they're an 8ply tyre, were cheap! Don't know what retail price is, but at $220 each (mates rates) for 35s, I'll give them a go.

Maxxis and Silverstones are good for a weekend truck in $$$ vs fun factor. But for a daily driver I would steer (excuse the pun) well away as they are noisy and wear quite quickly. IMO go either MTR's if you want to go towards good KM's on road or as Cheezy said Radial Claws for a more agressive patten. TUFFRANGIE as per what you've described you want this next set of rubber for anything else will not be all that good value wise... sure each tyre has it +'s and -'s but you did say this is what you want them for

BFG or MTR, shop on price and service (or follow a recomendation to a good shop). Both brands seem to have a good track record now, but for street tyres I would be looking for longevity, especially if you were thinking of bias tyres later.
