NC front diff swap

Post by SLOGQ »

Hi everyone,
A good friend of mine has a NC pajero that was a 2.6 petrol (now has a VN commodore V6) SWB, and is keen to know a few things.... mabey some one can help.

Is there a larger rear diff(as in larger centre) that can be swapped in?

How hard is it to swap the rear suspention from leaf to coil?

Has anyone ever cut the front IFS out and swapped in a live axle, if so what housing did they use, ect.....

Any input would be great.

Thanks guys
Steve

Hi Steve

Have a look through the "Tech Imfo" thread - some of your answers are there.

Vehicles with the 2.8td and the 3.5 V6 have larger rear diffs - don't think they were released in Aus with rear leaves, and I don't know about the complexities of swapping, so can't help there.

The live axle swap (also called SAS, for solid axle swap) has been done, and Bitsamissin (aka Frank, our Mighty Moderator  ) is having this done RIGHT NOW! The "Jabber Renaissance Project" at the top of the Mitsi section is all about the process.

Ultimately, Frank is the Guru - he should be able to help.

Cheers,

Scott

Yes the 2.6 has a 7.25" front diff and an 8" rear diff.
You can upgrade the rear diff to the 9" version from a NF/NG 3.0 V6, axle size is the same but a much stronger centre and rear disc brakes. You will have to swap over the whole assembly though. In terms of the factory coil set up I would go custom probably A frame or 4 link as almost the same amount of work would be involved. Also a 2.8 TDI or 3.5 V6 rear diff is 10" and runs HUGE rear axles but they will give you about 1" wider rear track.
The front can be upgraded to the NF/NG 3.0 V6 8" front diff this will give you the 28 spline axles (2.6 = 25 spline) and slightly bigger CV's. Again you will have to swap in a whole assembly but it all should bolt in ok.
If you can find a NF/NG wreck with the 3.0 V6 it would be the cheapest way.
Front solid axle swaps have been done mostly using Dana 44's as the pumpkin is on the left hand side for a Paj.
Virtually all other front solid axles have the pumpkin on the right hand side.
I'm doing a solid axle conversion at the moment using a re-tubed Hilux housing to shift the pumpkin to the left hand side. It will still be able to run the standard size axles.
I just luv my "clacker Jabber"

Yep, you can convert to the 3L V6 rear end. We did this when we put the V6 in our old shorty.
