lux diff ratios

can anyone tel me if there is a way of working out what ratio a diff is in a '92 sr5 2.8d with out pulling it apart

in the gregores manuals and book like that tell you in a chart formate
very easy to use avaliable from autobarn, supercheap, so on.

the charts are fine until someone changes the ratios, sells the rig and the new owner has no idea what the after market ratios are

then you have no choice but to but the thing out there is no markings on the outside of the third member or anyother way of telling you have to pull it out but for what you said in your first post i got the inpression that you were after the fatory gears

Put the rear on stands, get someone to turn the rear wheel 10 times in the same direction, at the same time count the revolutions of the pinion shaft, divide the pinion revs by 10.
Hope this works

or maybe mark the flange and mark the tire then completly spin it once then count how many times it spins then work out whats left like a fraction

If you drop your tailshaft and look on the head of the pinion where the nut goes on there is usually the number of teeth stamped on the pinion. It will look something like 7/32 which stands for 7 teeth on the pinion and 32 on the crown wheel . Divide 32 by 7 = 4.571 ratio. Not all manufacturers stamp them but its worth a look.

According to gregorys workshop manual covering hilux diesels between 1988 and 1997 both the rigid front end and the independent front end hilux diesels have a diff ratio 4.3:1.

My 94 hilux diesel 4.1:1 so that's not allways right

Is that an original diff or an after market replacement .It appears to be more the ratio suited to the petrol hilux.

It's the original. Some had them apparently. Mine also has an electronic speedo drive and I haven't seen any others with it.

I work in spare parts and today checked the genuine toyota parts books , the Hiluxes from 1988 to 1998 came with either 4.3, 4.5 or 4.88 diffs the 4.1 ratio is used in landcruiser diff centres which some models diff heads will fit into hiluxes. The 4.5 and 4.88 ratios were usually used in petrol motors.

Mine was a standard 2LT with 4.5 diffs in it.

Not that this will help you if they've been changed, but what is the code on the plate on the firewall? the TRANS/AXLE code will tell you what diff ratio it had originally. Check it with www.offroad.com

no diesel 2lte . i checked the front crown and pinion and the crown has 39 teeth and the pinion has 8

ok i done the spin the wheel thing we marked the flange spun the wheel and got a differant count front and back but should i have to double the revs or what cause i got 2.25 front and 2.125 rear for 1 rev

Just had a thought.
If your diffs are open, try lifting only one wheel.
I've found it better to turn the wheel ten times to get a good reading.

When I fitted my diff locks I'm sure I counted 10 - 41 teeth. Someone that knows a fair bit about them told me that some come with 4.1:1 so I thought it must be right. I'll have to check, maybe I can't count

To identify the gear ratio without getting dirty

paint on the pinion nut color will be:
silver 4.56
green 4.38
yellow 4.11
pink 4.10
red 3.98
blue 3.07
no paint 3.55

I always lift one wheel and spin it twice. I pulled a pair of diffs from a Hilux last week and found a 4.88 in the rear, 4.5 in the front........don't think it would have lasted long on the tar.

i just had the rear changed to match the front after the sas
we worked out if you spin the wheel once if only one wheel is lifted you can double it
or
if both raised just count and work out the fraction
