Tire dilema

Post by fiik »

hey all...

after a bit of a run on the weekend which was unfortunaly cut short by staking a tire i came across a disturbing fact... the tyres that are on my truck are fricking expensive to replace.... around $250 trade :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: ... yokohama superdiggers or something like that. Also after closer inspection of the other tyres i realised that in fact 3 out of 4 need to be replaced, and not wanting to spend close enough to a grand on tyres i have a couple of questions.

what is the largest tyre i could fit on a frontera sport without doing any suspension work....

and what would be a good tyre to purchase considering the price i have already been quoted( i figure if i have to pay this amount there has to be something that would be better off road.)

Also if you up the size of the wheels do you have to do any speedo mods?

If anyone has any avice it would be greatly appreciated

You never mentioned the size of the tyres?

I am sure for $250 you could get a BFG or Cooper or Goodyear or whatever you like.

Speedo changes will depend on how much bigger you go. Also depends on whether you care or not. I mean with my 31in on my Rodeo my speedo is out 5%. Fine for me but when my wife drives it with those tyres on I just am never sure if she will remember to keep her speed down (on the speedometer).

Speaking of speedo changes, does anyone now of a place in Brisbane where I can get it changed to suit my 31in tyres?

Is it just an adaptor on the speedo cable or something I can remove easily when I put my standard size wheels back on. (225/75 16) ?

You can get a VDO electronic ratio box from SGESCO in Archerfield. $230 I think. Had a few problems locating the speedo input cable. There is another identical coloured cable in the wiring loom under the dash but I couldn't work out what it was for. Ended up pulling the instrument panel out, which wasn't difficult, and cutting in directly behind it. Also cabled it so I can disconnect the unit and re-connect the speedo wihtout removing the panel again just in case the electronics go US. I switch between standard 235/75x15 and 31" MTR's for off road work. 10% difference in indicated speed.

Try this link from 4x4wire Isuzu forum

I plan on doing this myself but haven't yet. Would be easy to change when I put my 31in tyres on then change back when I put my 29in tyres on.
