Landy or Nissan?
Landy or Nissan?
I currently drive a Land Rover defender 110, but I want to change to sometihng a little more civilised (see topic "Landy or Nissan" on the Rover forum if you are interested in my experiences)
I will most likely get a GU patrol III with a few mods. (I plan to take a Patrol, Cruzer and Disoo for a test drive soon for comparison).
I would appreciate advise on which Patrol to go for.......I want a solid tourer that can play on rocky stuff too. I'm thinking 285/75 tyres, OME suspension and snorkel as mods...I don't want to spend a fortune and I don't need an off road weapon. I prefer the ST as it looks bit more refined than the DX.
So 3L or 4.2L???
I'm probably buying second hand and it seems most second hand offerings are the newer 3L direct injection...I haven't seen any 4.2L wagons for sale (1 - 2 year old model wanted). Another plus for the 3L is it is available in auto.

Yep after 12 years of Rover's getting cheezed off with electrical crap , oil leaks poor build quality constant breaking down fuel injection drama blah blah and spending a squillion on them i sold up and hunted around for 2 months , found a 2000 GU 4.2TD with 39k on the clock .
After having series 3 , Range Rovers x3 , Disco and County's I wish i had done this years ago and saved me thusands
The GU is unreal , very very happy , just want all the add on's now
More comfortable , bullet proof drive train , electric's that work , top buld quality and diesel !
Im building mine up for long treks around Oz
can't wait to get going !

I'm an ex landy owner. Had Series 2, 3 then coil sprung rovers.
Sold the 110 about a year ago, bought a GQ 4.2 diesel wagon. I really miss s the character of the landy, the ability to hose it out and the fact that dents dont really look out of place but I dont miss the constant doubts about whether I would get home and all the tools and spares I used to carry for peace of mind. The GQ is much better to drive, infinitely more reliable and comfortable and just as good if not better off road. Mechanically the GQ is far superior to a landrover. But I would love to have a Defender body on a GQ chassis/drivetrain. That would be my idea of the ultimate 4x4.
I live on the Cooloola coast and do a lot of beachwork and I think the GQ is going to rust out a lot quicker than the landy however.

I had a look at new GU's today... the sales guy assured me the 3L was the go (of course he did), but seems everybody I talk to reckons the 4.2L is the go. Guess I better start saving the extra 5k!
Oil drippa...I feel pretty much the way you DID, hope I am as happy with the patrol when I get it as you are.
