IFS cross linked air shocks trick for better front flex
Wondering what people think of this idea for getting a bit more articulation out of an IFS. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/air_shocks/
It involves using pump up air shocks on the front end and winding down the tension on the torsion bars a bit. Then linking the two shocks air lines together so when one wheel compresses the shock it tries to push the opposite wheel down forcing a bit more articulation out of the front end.
I was thinking if a simple ball valve was added then it could be closed (after parking on flat ground) to reduce body roll on road.
I cant afford to do my SAS for a while and I can probably get some shocks cheap though my work so I might give it a go.

OK OK enough with the IFS bashing. I hate the crappy IFS as much as anyone. Im just trying to work with what I got untill I can afford to go the whole hog with a SAS.
Not sure if I will bother doing this or not. I will price some shocks today and see what my wallet says
And yes the IFS idler arm is poo.

Has any one resolved / made a stronger idler arm. I bent 4 of them. Would have thought some one would have come up with a stronger idea. I looked at sleaving the center but the Toyota molding wont allow it as its too thin in sections.
Speaking of which you want 1. I got 1 in the shed in great (near new, 2nd hand but never fitted to my car yo can have for $60 - paid $100).

DON`T SPEND MONEY ON IFS.the little gains yet get out jigging stuff isn`t going to make it any stronger and the extra flex or what ever still isn`t going to do sh$t.

Well I have decided not to worry about stuffing round with the IFS.
Apart from maybe fitting a locker (I figure if I can get one cheap enough there are milions of IFS luxs out there I could sell it to after I SAS it and get most of my money back).

Madness have you broken your front end bits before or after fitting the locker?
I have heard that an ARB helps stop the crownwheel+pinion from grenading due to them flexing less.
But I would imagine that a lot more stress would be on the CVs while locked.

I have done heaps of damage to my entire front end driveline, and suspension.
Damage: Both upper control arms damaged, 2 crown wheels, 2 pinions, ripped all teeth off all centre gears, and snapped the pin securing the planetry gears. Done 2 CV's as well.

Yep I've reached the end of the line with the IFS as well. After breaking a couple of inner axels, 2 CV's, tie rods & 3 idler arms. Thats with 4" of IFS lift, 5" out back & 35" tires, lockers front & back. I've got my Surf going into Cheezy for a solid swap with coils . by mid Oct I should be floating over the ruff stuff instead of scarin' the bejezus out of myself lifting wheels .
I can't wait.

Brian, ths is a MAJOR problem that you have pointed out and would very badly effect the way the lux/4x4 performs... for anyone else that wants to do this mod, dont take this point lightlly unless you only drive flat ground (carparks or speed humps). I have thought about this alot throught another concept and have come to this same conclusion....but the rest of my info is TOP SECRET.
