gday mate sounds like the injectors need replacing but that just depends on how many kms r on it? usually around 100000km roughly

id recommend checking injector pump timing first and then service the injectors and if that doesnt fix O/haul the pump where abouts are you located

i just got a reconditioned set from brisbane diesel injectors at rockleea (not much help to you) but i did a swap with them - give 'em my old injectors and get some newwies for $270. i can notice a major difference in power and smoothness. by the way my LN106 has done nearlly 200000klms

why would you fiddle with the pump timing - it doesn't change unless the pump has been removed. at 120,000km it is unlikely that the pump has been off, and it's also unlikely that the pump has problems. Injector wear can have a negative effect on injection timing but this is corrected by renewing the needles and seats in the injectors, resetting the cracking pressure and spray pattern.

leave the pump alone until the injectors are sorted out, if injectors don't solve your problem then the pump may need attention but it is very unlikely that pump problems will cause smoke (overinjection), pump wear is more likely to manifest itself as underfuelling and a lack of power with no smoke.

only time i know of the pump causing black smoke is when the govener diaphram in mine went out to lunch, but that was coulped with a 2000rpm idle.

How's your fuel economy?, dont know if it applicable on your engine, but on the 2H, sometimes the fuel adjustment screw can come loose and cause overfueling = smoke and lost power.

should I swim it first ?

not really applicable to the rotary pumps - the fuel screw screws IN for more fuel unlike the 2H inline pump, so if it comes loose you start getting less fuel/power.

you'd have to almost deliverately leave the locking ring loose on a 2H for the screw to come loose?

yes. the injectors need servicing at 100,000km. or less if it has had a hard life. it is in the factory service schedule. and yes you should definitely take it to a diesel specialist.

Had ours done on the 4runner about 6 weeks ago - rebuild of injectors & injector pump ( was leaking ) $1520 inc labour. Looks like pump hadn't been touched since new! Truck has 440,000km on it.

If the injectors weren't done at 100K, what about the timing belt ?? Not sure of the belt life in the 3.0 litre, but the 2.8 is 100K

um

my injectors have done 380 thousand and have NEVER been out.

in an indirect injected diesel it is the pre combustion chamber that performs much of the swirl and the swirl and spray generated by the injector is not _AS_ important. (bad injectors will still cause problems)

is the 3litre direct injected?

if not i seriously doubt its the injectors, i have had no experience with the 3litre diesel but my old mans 2.8 diesel did 220 without the injectors being touched also.

trouble with taking it to diesel specialists is that they almost always recomend a pump overhaul. Every time ive taken my cruiser to a diesel specialist (3 or 4 of them) they have all said that the injector pump needs an overhaul, well, its still going strong, 100k later....

good to hear about the revived power.

have you adjusted your tappets at all? my old man adjusted mine in the 2H recently as they were getting noisy. If yours are the bolt and screw type adjustment it will be easy, if they are they shim type it will be a pain.

you can use a set of feeler guages to check wether they need adjusting. Youl need the specifications though.
