first car=2 door rangie
Moderator: Micka
rangie
there is also a nice looking 2dr in the for sale section for $1200, would be a good basis for a first car as you have some time to fix any probs it may have.
Nick.
Nick.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
My '80 two door is for sale but not at a give away price and it's hardly in a conveinient spot but...
It does have a newly de-rusted and resprayed body (white), good '85 Graeme Cooper motor (out of tune at the moment), new water pump and hoses, new windscreen, totally renovated interior (new carpet, door trim, headlining, seat bases and cubby box), new Disco springs, new bushes, Bilsteins, six original wheels with 205R16's (currently resting on four of them), five 15"x7" mags with good 265's(?) Bridgestone Duellers, set of springs for 2" lift, towbar, 2nd battery kit, factory manual and two HD wheel nut spanners.
It ain't rego'd (it has been off the road for nearly three years) but it is basically ready to go. Just some interior bits to go in and a tidy up.
Kinda lost interest in it. Spent way too much money on it to get it this far and really couldn't be stuffed finishing off the details and getting it rego'd. No longer have the time, money or inclination to use as designed.
But I'd like better than six grand for it (what I'd really like is better than eight but I am a realist) which I reckon is fair since it has fresh paint, absolutely zilch rust and a new interior. Plus a very healthy motor. And lots of tyres and wheels and other bits. In other words it is pretty much sorted.
It is in a shed in far west NSW and available to all comers. PM me if yer interested.

mines a 1976 and the only thing wrong with the interior was the seats , but then i just put seat covers on them
fish_man wrote:lol what happened to the seats?, shit i just thought does anybody have their manuals close to them i was wondering how many KWs and how much it weighs, i might not be able to drive her on me P's
The rubber base in the bottom of the seat falls apart after a while, and you end up sinking into the seat more (as well as the standard tears/stains/cigarette burns in the seat itself!). I've sorta patched mine up by criss-crossing seatbelt webbing underneath to stop me sinking into the seat.
Power to weight - no problem. I had an 83 4 door as my first car on my P's. I think the rule in Vic is no more than 125kw/tonne. A standard 3.5 early 80's RR puts out about 150hp which is ~ 111kw. No Problems!
fish_man wrote:i am still tossing up wether i will be able to offord the petrol on the ol girl just a question, 1980 rangie would that be on leaded?
I run unleaded in our 80RR.
I run gas in the 79 4.4, and occasionally premium unleaded (due to the timing).

79 Rangie (his name is Ralf) 4.4 dual fuel, with plenty of other mods.
Oils leaks are a factory option to prevent rust!

The other regs state that you can measure the power to weigh by Litres per tonne.
I think you are allowed 3.5 litres for every tonne.
Land Rover Discovery - GQ conversion underway
i did 2 weeks for placement at 4wd connections in eltham and the guys talked me outa it and off rangies, they reackon there gutless and suck tooo much juice and the issue with getting parts very $$$$$$ apperently if u want genuine ones, kept thinking about a GQ 4.2 desial for a while, but my mate has talked me into a 2.8l deasial hilux, problem is i can't seem to find too many around the place, also interested in bunderas, but there is only 1 in the trading post and its a sucky auto
so i have know idea at the moment, what do u guys reackon?

if you buy a diesel patrol it would end up costing you more in the short term probably than buying the rangie and fixing it all the time if it breaks.
GQ Diesel=around $13000-$16000
diesel=$1-$1.10 per litre
oil&filters every 5000km=$100
service every 5000km=$300 (sometimes more sometimes less)
economy=10km/l (i think)
performance=slow
Rangie=$5000(can find cheaper easily or more expensive easily, took the middle road)
petrol=$.95c-$1.05/l
maintenance=$500 every 5000km
economy=5km/l
performance=respectable
Character=Lots!
So even if you are using twice the fuel and a bit more maintenance you will still be better off in the short term(first 70,000km approx).
You will be ahead about $7000 after buying the car, that can buy you a lot of parts and petrol. The rangie has a managable 100in wheelbase as opposed to a practical but massive lwb patrol (116in or so) or a short but slightly impractical swb patrol(which is what i currently own, but a petrol) (96in or so). It is comfortable and capable off road in stock form heaps of mods are available. In stock form they also don't break stuff offroad that often if you look after them. Plenty of power and a lovely alloy petrol V8 that sounds awesome and is very light.
Diesel patrols are awesome but I say go the Rangie, or a swb petrol gq patrol (on dual fuel if worried about economy)
Just my 2c
Rob
P.s. the figures are just estimates from my head, not based on any facts they could all be wrong, but not that much

fish_man wrote:cheers mate, i was under the impression that rangies guzzeled the fuel, and if i get one it will proply be a old 4 door or a 2 door, and i have heard things about trying to faise super out, or how do they run on gas?
Like a champ and they are cheap to convert, heaps more capable and workable than a patrol - you won't tear as much off a rangie as you will off a GU if you get into the driving.
2 Door rangie/carbie V8 will run on premium, unleaded, LRP and Gas fine,
the 3.9L V8 don't like optimax - tends to burn their exhaust valves.
And all the bullsh*t about parts - FFS ask the nissan blokes how much
a starter motor costs - genuine $1100, aftermarket around $450
rangie - genuine $700 after market - $250.
All 4x4s cost money in parts - you just got to know who to ask and to shop around for good deals
Tom
mmmmm very true i will atdmit
