80 series part-time kit

Already posted in toyota section with no responce. Want to know if anyone has fitted the kit or
helped fitted a kit, how they found the destructions
I found the destructions pretty vauge
in some areas? No where does it say a hydrolic press
would be handy or a rattle gun.

I have never done a part time conversion, but I've done plenty of transfer case work - crawler gears, overhauls etc, and the instructions are usually aimed at the kind of person who has been elbow deep into transfer cases before - I think the assumption is that if you've going to tear into your transfer case, you're going to have appropriate experience, tools and facilities available. At what level should the instructions be aimed?

eg "removed the seven bolts from the transfer output extension housing" OR

"take a 14mm 1/2" drive socket, 4" 1/2" drive extension and a 1/2" drive ratchet, with the ratchet set for counterclockwise operation, and assemble the socket to the extension, then couple the socket-extension assembly with the ratchet handle. Using this socket-extension-ratchet assembly, rotate the seven bolts which retain the transfer extension housing to the rear transfer case half, exactly eighteen turns each until each bolt can be withdrawn from the transfer case assembly. Clean and polish each bolt and lay them out in order for ease of reassembly. Disaasemble the socket-extension-ratchet assembly and return the component parts to their respective storage places in your tool box"

ok maybe that's going too far, but the point is, the person writing the instructions has to assume a certain level of knowledge, skill and tool availability. I know this isn't very comforting especially if your transfer case is now exploded all over your front lawn but look on the bright side - once you get it all back together, you'll be a transfer case part time conversion pro!

I'm a ex motor mechanic (holden) but no real experience
with gearboxes or transfer cases this is first fourby.
but if it stated a rattlegun and press could be needed to allow something to be arranged before hand would of been good. the instructions say can be done by the diy owner. i had everything on hand at home bar press and compressed air. i guess the major problem was that the picture part of the instructions
lacked arrows with notes attached to make it easier.
just could of been a little clearer. :)

:finger: Yeah i put in a part time kit in my 80 about 2 years ago, had no problems. Yes it would have been handy to be told that you have to use a prss, but other than that it was not to hard.
PS. Best mod i have done so far now i can play in the mud agan without just going in a stright line.
