mods to j arm

Post by lil86 »

hey i was reading an old 4wd monthly (2003 tuff truck i think) and noticed a feature on a roofless 1st gen red hilux with flames down the side. anyone remember it? anyway looking at the pics he's running 2 inch lifted springs with 3 inch dropped hangers with a standard draglink mounted ontop of the j arm. is this an easy fix to the bad angles and clearance problems?? i realise the j arm will still bend a bit under exteeem stuff but it wouldnt really matter coz u'd have miles of clearance. any thoughts? how hard to do??

you can remove to ball from the end of the j arm and put on the top. but is it really worth it?? it's a Dudelux setup to start with. cross over ;)

no pics, eh!

the mod can be done but it is pretty dodgy. you need to cut off the peening on the ball then press the ball out, then ideally press in a new ball and peen it over.

alternatively you can get a "z" draglink from some 4Wd shops, this is probably the cheapest solution.

the z drag links aren't cheap compared to the chaos double arm.

I reckon they are once you add in the cost of a IFS steering box, draglink, and chassis mods. crossover isn't exactly a bolt on solution.

yeh i'll try and get some time to scan the pics in over the weekend. they're a bit small so u gotta look hard to see the steering thats y i wanted more info. if u dont wanto move the diff foreward i can see y this isnt just as good as a z draglink. only thing i could see that would be a problem is that most things that are pressed in have a slight angle to hold in the pressed item. and if u put the ball in the top the angle will be going the wrong way.

Personaly i could never see how this is effective as when i had stock steering on my hilux i had enough flex to hit the Jarm on the bump stop pad on the chassie and that was with a stock J arm. So putting the ball on the top would have been worse but a lot of guys seam to do it. My arm wasnt bent as i kept having to replace them after they would get bent from constantly hitting the chassie.

Now if you still want to do it you need to grind the old ball out then get the taper reamed in from the other end. Then you buy a 60 series ball from the steering box. They bolt in rather than weld in. Then just bolt this in.
