Fuel econemy in sd33t engine
Fuel econemy in sd33t engine
just wondering what sort of econemy you guys are getting, mines not running right and only geting about 450kms out of a 60ltr tank
I used to be abler to get 700k's from 75lt in mine but sadly now the rings are going to heaven I only get 550 & it wont pull up the hills anymore like it did. Mine has died due to excess fuel as I was too slack to do the injectors. Good excuse to le the minister for finance to let me buy a GQ. Wont be making the same mistake again though.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.

Thank god for your post MKPATROL..... I was begining to think my 80 MQ was a freak !
1160 k's per tank !! ( 80 lit), I fill it once a month and it only does town driving, hasnt exceeded 90 kph for about 2 years !
Fatherinlaw had it b4 me and he recons he'd get just over 1200 k's from a tank but that was 4 or 5 years back.
speedo reading is 265,000 k's

Kingy,
Its not unusual to get that many k's from an early model SD33. If they are in good nick there is nothing better on fuel for the era, not even a 2L Hilux is as good. The turbo ones use more fuel but have a lot more power. Mine has been good & the only reason in not rebuilding it is because I want coil springs,

No freewheeling hubs would be part of the problem. What are the compressions, injectors and pump like? The 80's was the era of the Friday cars. When I was doing my apprenticeship we were starting to replace blue motor Holden engines pretty regularly. Some would last 300,000ks & others were lucky to make 100,000. It was a bit the same for Nissan as they were going through big changes in their company. Nissan engines were fairly good in the seventies but the quality went down until the late eighties. You will rarely find a problem with Nissan running gear these days.
Maybe thats as good as your going to get out of your SD33.
My mk at 300,000k's needs rebuilding where my old mans gq at 330,000 is in great nick & evarthing works.

This is an old thread, but i was reading it from the bible and wanted to post my own numbers :p
Well ive got an 85 MK n/a diesel, drive it pretty hard but most of my driving is highway at 100. Average economy seems to be 10l/100km, although a head wind can take it upto 12l. Hoping to go on a big trip next weekend so might see my real country driving economy.

My old MK had a sd33t. when i bought it it had 405000 ks on it. i sold it to a mate with 412000ks on it and he still drives it. Fuel economy not fantastic but not bad either. Car has had hard life and compression is getting a little low but this thing still hauls arse! smokes on startup but wants its warm its ok. So all you Mk drivers out there with a sd33t that has 300000ks on it im tellin you i reckon you've got a fair bit of fun left yet!!
right, time to drag up an old topic, just saw it in the bible...
81 SWB MQ SD33, 60lt tank, 750km easy, tad less if im in the city abit and a tad less again if im offroad for more than a few hours at a time.
have gotten 900km from her once, was all highway work and never over 80kph (still on P-Plates)

sd33t injector pump advance
Hey guys good too hear im not the only one using fuel in an sd33t. Normal ols split rims i get about 7km too the liter. but on 35's with speedo on 100km/h i can get up too 8.5 km/L.
I am a mechanic by trade so i thought if i wreck the motor it wont matter. It's a non-turbo motor with factory turbo and injector pump fitted. Ok you advance a petrol too just before it starts too ping this will improve enconomy. After talkin to many older mechanics they all seem to think the most nissan diesels are run retarded out of the factory. (Not too max performance)
Chasing better economy and more power i bit the bullet and advanced the pump about 5 too 8 degrees. This has completely changed the tune of the engine altogether. BUT there is no sign at all of white smoke, (sign of too advanced) I doo think i could go a little further with the timing because i have a lot of spare sd33 pistons, so melting one wont matter.
Am doing a trip too brisbane this weekend coming so will let you all know how it goes. Also,, Neary everthing in my cooling system is new (Rad, fan and clutch, hoses, T-stat) But it still runs about 95d/c when working which is too high i think for a 20 year old diesel. tests soo far have seen improvement with engine temps since advancing the timing.

im gunna keep on counting when im getting econ like that! mite be a 25 yr old engine, but bugger me it runs on less juice than most 4wd's ya will get these daysPatchy wrote:there a big engine. stop counting k's and drive it. if you start counting k's on any car you will never be happy, esspecally with the cost of fuel these days
