i see snake racing has a bolt on kit to be released.
anyone know if there is alread a kit out there somewhere?
i know there were some lengthy discussions earlier in the year about this but i dont think anyone really sorted out the handbrake issue?
a bolt on kit would be swoit, so long as its reasonably priced.

I played a little with a diff i had, put std front discs on the std rear hubs by using the std front wheel studs and some machining of the back face of the hub on a disc lathe.
Now v8 ford rear callipers xd/xe vintage have a handbrake in them and are the right thickness...only a bracket is needed to be fabricated.
Brian did it using solid hilux discs and subaru callipers...another good design.

approximately how much do you think the raw parts would cost you dowsor. ie discs and calipers
i know a tool maker who could make me up the brackets for a carton of beer. Would a 6 or 8mm plate of mild steel do the trick? machined or bent to the right offset?

close. I used GQ vented disks and subaru calipers. required no machine work at all eexcept cutting out the brackets, which was all done with a 9" angle grinder.
it was on the rear of a bundera (same as hilux) but would work the same on a cruiser, only difference is the bracket mounting bolts.
and the bonus is the subaru front calipers have a robust handbrake mechanism - with these calipers it is also very easy to set up a differential handbrake system so you can have poor mans lockers byt applying the handbrake of the spinning wheel only.

Sorry for the big quotes guys. I have an FJ73 that I am putting 60 Series diffs under, at the moment i have brand new rear, drums, cylinders and shoes, but I might sell them and buy brand new front components.
I would like to put brand new brakes on the front and the old front discs on the rear. I am looking at fitting a Gen 3 Holden (Chev) engine, so extra braking power would be nice.
Dow50r - Would you happen to have a template of the caliper mounts at all. I am guessing since I already have the 60 Series parts that this would be a cheaper option...

I am 3/4s through widening my rear diff and and adding discs. I already have 60 series running gear but have added 80 series hubs. These bolt straight on giving an extra 3 inches of width. I then used 70 series rear discs as they will slide over the hub instead of needing to be bolted to the back of it (so there is no drama with wheel studs and the discs can be easily removed). 80 series rear calipers are identical to the 70s and I am just making up the brackets to suit. I went for the 70s discs over 80 discs as the 80s are deeply dished and I wanted the caliper well within the wheel rim.
The handbrake will simply be tapped into the brake lines and the standard cable will interact with a seperate brake piston giving a 4 wheel disc handbrake.

That does sound about right, about having to be mechanical, but what if Handbrake cable was to snap, still forked either way - probably less chance of it breaking than the cylinder letting go

Not too sure about RWC and handbrake...but two things...
Firstly I own a Toyota, so it has never had a handbrake that works anyway.
Secondly, the only thing left as road worthy on my 40 is the windscreen wiper switch.
I just want a hand brake that works.

Do you mean upgrading ZJ Diffs?
Is there a ?ZJ60, must be if that is what your talking about.
I have 60's diffs, Disc Front and Drum rear, would I go about this the same way.
If possible I would put current disc from front onto rear, and buy new discs for the front.

me thinks your a bit confused.
mudtoy has 60 series diffs under his 40. he is upgrading the rear drums to discs. he is using 80 series hubs to widen the track by 3 inches overall. then he is using later model 70 series rear discs.
this is for the rear only.
to widen the front you can use IFS hilux hubs and get a spacer kit to space your disc back into its original place. there is no need to change the front discs. they are used with the spacer kit.

so an 80 series hub and disc brake bracket will bolt stright up to a 60 series? And then you will have mechaniocal handbrake.
Rear 80 disc brakes don't/won't bolt up to a cruiser rear housings that were originally fitte with drum brakes. Even thou the hubs interchange the configuration or where the backing plate/mounting brackets bolt up is completly different. You need a custom rear disc brake set up on 40's, 55's, 60's & 75's. I manufacture the rear kits Eureka sell, they use front Hilux solid disc's and caliper's and the handbrake set up from a FJ 47 that have the split type transfer. Mark's 4wd Adaptors also are making a handbrake setup for the split type transfer !
