hey fellas has anyone made a fuel (petrol) tank sucessfuly from scratch. if so what steel did you use. i was thinking gal sheet of around 1.5mm thick. are they prone to cracking. i can either mig or tig it, but would prefer mig as tig is mind nummingly slow (and my low current setting is cactus and will need a rewind ! i was wanting to make two of over 100litres each to fit behind my gq extra cab up against the firewall. i'm not fussed about legality as it will be fully hidden.
also i know stainless is prone to cracking but has anyone had any luck with it.
it will need to be strong to hadle the obc

made them for my old serries landy they were raesonable easy box with baffles used black steel plate 3mm base 2mm side off memory you can't use gal sheet as when you weld it it will break down and you will spend the next year changing fuel filters they don't rust on the inside anyway if you want it gal you can have it hot diped costs about $20-$30 at Newcastle about 2 years age
i normally use zinc seal for the sides and top, or similar product and oxy weld them, a more ductile weld (better for vibration) and less chances of pin holes if you are stop starting to reduce distortion. you can spend days chassing the suckers
i normally make the top and sides out of one piece and fold them up then tack the baffels in, then the bottom which i normally make out material that is around twice the thickness of the rest. ie sides and top 1.6mm bottom 3mm

To help stop the cracking and vibration through the tank you could have an X kinda pattern bend pressed into the sides I guess. I know I have seen that before somewhere
