If someone was gunna buy a cheap fourby for doing up for semi serious offroad work, what make do u think would be best?
'Cheap' is subjective so lets say <=$5000
Is it to be a daily driver
For a daily driver I'd say a range rover Very capable, quite comfortable and cheap as all sh1T a clean reliable runner can be had on road for 3.5 leavin some $ for a little lift, some good 2nd hand play tyres and a rear locker Like that it'll eat 'medium' offroad work
If it's more a play thing then you can't beat a zook Mine will become a w'end toy when I finish uni and I'll probably get a rangie for dd/ longer trips Zooks are cheap, easy to mod, cheap, manouverable, cheap, capable, cheap and have just about anything available for em

wouldnt be used as a daily driver. I live only four kms from some good tracks so it doesnt even have to be registered....

An old Lux... mid 80's. cheap as, diesel, go for ever, tray back or tube it out.
Parts are everywhere, every mechanic can work on Toyota Diesels... Also more load carrying than a zook for the camping and trail gear.
And Jase... dont get caught on those trails with an unreg car... they are state forests and they say you have to be registered and licenced.

I knew they had to be registered in Newes but didnt think they have to be in Lisdale. I mean theres heaps of bikes in there that aren't redo'd.

I have costed parts to repair stuck valve, consisting of cylinder head re-grind, new valves, both exhaust & inlet for all of right side cylinders, all parts sourced from Four Wheel Drive Spares in Box Hill, for approx. all up A$ 1,000.00 car will be back on road, this is based on that you dismantle and refit the cylinder head. Full set of workshop manuals (2 volume) are included.

A zook is perfect for local fun, but if you gotta travel a bit to the trail, then a hilux might be better. Both rigs have plenty of aftermarket support and spares. Lux is not as nimble as a zook in the tight stuff, but hills can be a bit dodgy in a zook, carrying capacity limited in the zook (for distance/camping etc) and a lux tray is good for other work - rubbish to the tip, sit on the back at comps (good spectator platform). Seen both rigs do some amazing things offroad...

I'm probably crazy for saying this, but i've heard that hilux's arrn't as tough as they are made out to be.....
Maybe there are specific models that didnt do as well as others?
Zook would be great if i could het my hands on a long wheel base model.

Anything can be broken, and all machines need maintenance. Hiluxs are pretty reliable, componentry will take a reasonable bit of abuse before failing. As for capability, well, it all comes down to the driver...
If looking for a lux, look in the 84-89 bracket, or a surf/4runner of the same vintage. A 4runner has a better wheelbase, and cheap 4runners are more available than LWB zooks.

Actually i was thinking 4runner prioir to the zook but didnt get much feedback from them.
They seem to be going cheap and have plenty of room to throw things into the back.....
Not sure on the availability of "extra's" for these though? are 4runners solid axled?

I believe series 1 4runners are solid axle... up to 1989 I think... they IFS the shit out of them after that... I have a good article in a past issue of 4WD monthly at home on budget builds (under 10K) and one of them is the 4runner... I can take a copy of it and bring it with me next Sat if you like....

Can be a mixture of live axle and IFS in this year range, goes without saying hunt around for a live axle.
Share a lot of common gear as the hilux, so spares and extras are no problem. and don't be fooled into thinking that you need to modify the hell out of it to make it work well offroad - longfield cvs, lockers, crossover steering, hi-steer arms, ifs rear springs, blah blahblah. My lux is so simple, yet does some cool trails, without lockers, power steering etc.
Whatever you get, just have fun with it, you bought the thing to drive, not admire it on axle stands in the shed while you mod it...

Heaps easier to bust zook stuff than hilux gear I have a lwb zook and am pretty happy with it but a 4runner might be a bit better for ya Capable offroad, bolt ons available and you'll still prolly get air/ steer
