GQ Tank 2 hilux

Post by .MYTLUX. »

i know hypo was also planning to do this so i have spoken to him about it,
i know i need a pick up/sender from a GQ 2.8 or 4.2 deisel, what i want to know is how do i recalibrate it ?? do i need to?? how much??

overkill your mate with the gold 4-runner has a gq tank doesn't he???
got any advice for a novice like me :D :D

also any tips on mounting would also be appreciated, i will have tray off in next couple of weeks so i MAY have more of an idea then.

thanks

hi i own the gold 4runner. I had a GQ tank in the rear. i relocated my spare tyre on to a rear wheel carrier. the rear crossmember that holds the spare in factor position was removed and two new crossmembers were welded in. the possition can possibly be moved as you are running a tray, as well as the height you run it at. my front crossmember sat approx were the proportioning valve is, the proportioning valve was moved froward.the rear was spaced back the lenght of the tank. i had the tank sitting as high as possible with a 3 inch body lift. you will probably be able to go a bit higher with the tray.fuel gauge wires straight up to patrol pick up and sender unit. i got my tank for nothing from a 4wd shop , they throw them out when repacing them with longer range tanks.the sender unit cost about $90 from the shop after market unit. one problem i had was on be angle with less than half a tank i would lose fuel pickup. possably the sender unit wasnt long engouh . i fixed this with a serge tank
running the return line back to the surge tank not fuel tank .

any other question just ask.hope this helps

P.S after all this i nolonger run the tank as ive bobbed the truck 14 inches
and it no longer fits back to standerd for know!

i also 4got 2 mention that i spoke 2 a guy at an instrument place 2day and he said that if i am prepared 2 cut a new hole and that i can put my lux sender and pikup in the gq tank and bend the float arm so that it dont touch the top and bottom of the tank and ill b laughin coz then the sender and guage have not been changed so it will still work the same

Doesnt the GQ sender screw into a hole that is about 4 or 5 inches round?
If so then make a plate to bolt over it and drill a hole in it to suit the hilux sender and bend the float to suit that. Then you dont need to recalibrate anything.

Yeah i forgot about that have you looked at any other toyota tanks because if you can find one with both the pickup and sender in one you will prob find that they will work with the lux guage.

looked at that 2 tiny but the dude at the instrument place said that the hilux gauge used a funny resistance scale and it was 1 of a kind or sumthin which means that i wood have 2 get an aftermarket gauge and stick on my dash but i dont wana do that if possible

why not run a fuel pump between the two that can be turned on and off with a switch , when your origonal tank is runing low flick the switch on and pump fuel from the other tank into the origonal one. you would just have to run it into the return line

dave....
now thats a desent idea.......Is the GQ tank 90 odd litres??? Where did you place the filler neck for the tank?? If i was to run both the original and the patrol tank, i would have to cut another filler neck hole in the tray (not major i spose)........

I belive the tank is 92 liters. I run the filler into the original position the great difficultly but i was only using the one tank if you want to run the pair of them another fillerneck would have to be placed under the tray as you said.
Do you belive you will need that much fuel. I can drive from hornsby to
coffsharbor on the original tank, so i beleve that i'd get the best part of the way to the goldcoast on the patrol tank alone.

If you want to use both tanks then you only need the filler neck from a dual tank patrol as they only have one filler that has a Y section just inside so you can fill both tanks.
