FJ70 CV joint

well i buggered my right side one and i am in need of another. As FJ70's are quite rare, wreckers have been struggling to find one, one bloke offered me one off 60 series etc saying they are the same, and i dont think i believe him. So my question is what other cars can i gut for a cv joint for my FJ70?

Fairly sure they are the same as the HZJ75. You should be able to pick a short side one of those up for $150 or less [with inner axle].

I'm pretty sure it's the same as a hilux/60 series so you should be out of trouble for $50 or so at the wreckers. if ti has the low pinion 9.25" diff it is the same as a hilux. if it has the high pinion 8" diff it is the same as a HZJ/FZJ 75.

I have one of tthe HZJ style if you need it, $50 CV only, might have a short side axle if you need that too but would need yours to match it up.

75 series will be the go if it has a high pinion, Couple of weekends ago tried to see if i could fit a high pinion cv into a hilux..... no go, hits on the top side if the 'bell'.

The 70 series is a change in models.... early 70's had 40/60 running gear while late 70 series had 75 series running gear.

Im pretty certain you can use a Hilux,Early 75series or 40series short side axle and CV. The CV from all solid axle hilux's and cruisers except for a ZJ75 or 80/100 as these are larger. Also early 40 series(drum brake) had a slightly longer stub shaft on the CV but in desperation these can be used.

A 60series Short side axle is longer but the Long side axle is the same as is a Hilux long side.

Your Midwheelbase wont have a High pinion unless it has been swapped in.

FJ70 (1990) high pinion wont fit in hilux...... like I said before the top of the cv hits on the top of the nuckle. tried to fit in a mates hilux when he had it appart last week. The high pinion cv has an extra lip (5 to 6 mm) around the base of the bell.

40/60 and hilux have the same length axles (both sides) 75 series short side is the same however the long side is 40mm longer than 40/60 hilux, this is on the high pinions. Worked this out when I tried to fit a warn birfield eliminator kit to a high pinion diff. The kit fits 40/60 and 'pick up'....

An early FJ70 doesnt have a High Pinion diff. Glen doesnt own an early FJ70. They didnt go to the high pinion centre till after they fitted the 1HZ motor to the landcruiser.

Actually looking at your sig line im not sure you know exactly what you own??? Or its had a deisel engine conversion. If it has a 1hz then its not an FJ70 it has to be a HZJ70 of some type? The FJ series of cruisers had petrol engines The HJ and HZJ had Deisel engines.

Yep...... converted from a 3f (or in the process of) its a 1990 fj70 with a high pinion front, Had to change the chassis engine mounts, and fitted no probs

None of the models sold to the US public shares the axles used in the 1990+ 70 series, so I doubt Warn would make a birf eliminator kit to suit.

In the US, Toyota for some reason dropped the name "Hilux" after 1978, so their N series became known as "Toyota truck" "Toyota pickup", "Toy 4WD" or "minitruck"

You need to machine that small lip off the CV then die grind a small amount off the top and bottom of the swivel bell to fit them in.
But from what i have seen of these CVs they are not worth the effort for the small if any strength difference.

And i work for the Australian Company treating CVs localy- Haultech Engineering. We treat all hilux CVs and Rover CVs. We can also treat the ZJ75 CVs but this has to be done on supplied ones as we have no stock of these.

For the Hilux/40-60 and early 75series cruisers we can supply these treated cvs outright for $500 a Pair. These have had a ring welded on to the Bell and also heat treat the CV.

Thanks for th info dave, all I am basing my info is the warn kit "one size fits all" have seen one fitted to a hilux and a 40, so work that out,

The warn kit uses dana 44 axles modded to fit in the hub, the yokes are machined to fit, this is where some of the breakage have occurred and why warn stopped making the kit, and other reasons, the kit also up grades the bearings, hub to bigger spec items, pretty bling if you ask me. I managed to pick the kit up for the rite price

What strength increase do you get over a stock cv comparted to a treated cv and what approximate strength increase to the warn kit?

But from what you guys are saying I am buggered any way........
