Transmission Wind up?
I have a hilux that heads on and off road quite a lot so a lot of the time i just jeave the hubs locked cause its a pain gettin stuck and getting out in the mud to lock em in! Heard someone talking about "winding up the transmission" from leaving the hubs locked and driving some distance on the road. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Its Ok to leave the hubs locked as long as when your on hard non slip surfaces the thing is not in 4wd. The only reason you would unlock the hubs is to save unnecessary wear on seals and so on when not in 4wd & also to save on fuel by not having the diff spinning. If you drive for anymore than about 5k or so on non slip surfaces you'll start to damage the transmission if the 4b is in 4wd with the hubs locked. I always unlock my hubs cause its a shit of a job renewing the seals, particularly the ones around the axles

with part time 4wd and no locker on front diff, this should not be a prob, but you will get poorer economy and more road noise. wind up only happens if drive parts try to move indepentently from each other and cant, ie turning corners, unlevel ground etc with everything locked up. just the same reason as why you can't select 4wd on hard roads... but some like to leave front diffs spinning to keep oil warm and circulated before ya need it off road, christover

some say leaving the hubs in keeps the seals from drying out?
I'd just undo hubs when on road for long periods, then lock em up just before going bush, christover

Better yet, leave the hubs unlocked, just throw the lever to 4H now and then for a spell. Still gets everything spinning, lubed, and warmed up to drive out moisture, without having to bother with the hubs or deal with the effect a locker has on steering in 2WD.

My manual says for my Rodeo you should lock the hubs in for 30kms per month. When I go offroad I lock them in at the start of the trip and don't unlock them until I leave or sometimes not til I get home. However I use 2wd on non-slp surfaces.
It would be a complete PITA to unlock/lock hubs 100 times a trip. I think the other people in your group would soon get sick of waiting for you to do that also. My Rodeo is 7 years old and never needed any front end seals changed.
