95 4sp auto not going into 4th

Post by Davidh »

Hi all,

Got a problem with the missus' 95 Feroza, 4spd auto.
When it's cold, it won't go into 4th. It sits in 3rd and rev's it's little guts out.

When it's warm, say 5 mins it'll shift smoothly into 4th as normal.

Any ideas? Common problem? Auto fluid? Electrics?

Yeah, I think you'll find you're the only auto owner on here! Is it constant 4WD- or do you still have to select 4WD and lock the hubs? Has it got low range too??

Has the trans been serviced recently? I don't know much about them, but apparently a fluid and filter change can do wonders for them.

It could also be that the bands are worn and need replacing... would try a fluid change first though...

It's still a part-time 4wd system. Manual hubs, low range etc.

She only bought it about a month ago and we were given a receipt for the roadworthy check in June, and an auto service was done at the same time.
Which makes be worry, if the problem is happening after a service.

Maybe we'll do another fluid change and see if anything changes. I guess they could have put the wrong fluid in?

I've seen an auto behind a Chrysler 318 crap itself with auto fluid to suit a Magna!

AFAIK autos have normally got an internal (or external?) oil filter as well. Was that changed?

Is it an electronically controlled one too? That will throw another variable into the fault finding?

There was a line on the invoice for the auto service that had a filter for the transmission, so I'm assuming they changed it.

The fourth in an overdrive so it's likely to be electronically controlled.
