Too noisy brother...the boys will follow you everywhere...putting a straight through hotdog in there will fix that problem though!

Definatly do it. I had straight through 2-1/4 inch pipe from turbo back on my surf and it wasn't crazy loud. The three inch diameter will flow more but i still think it'll be fine... It'll whistle very nicely.
Worst comes to worst you can always get a resonator put back in where the muffler was.
And yes GQ you're right, in a way the turbo acts as a muffler, but only by breaking down the individual pulses of the motor into more of a flowing sound.

no muffler

Post by DR Frankenstine »

i ran straight through on my lwb 3.3 td and was great, but using exactly the same exhaust on my swb it was to loud (only 2' of pipe shorter). Put in a short straight through resonator, and quitened it down just enough, and made no noticable difference to performance.

I put a 2 1/2" straight pipe on a TD4.2 T and it was NZ legal and was not
unpleasent to drive.
Now ran the LT1 thru the same system and it sounded sweet but was cop bait so we fitted a Supa Flow muffler.

Carts of the board has turbo 2h in his 60 and his muffler fell off one day offroading and he liked the sound of it so he got a straight through part made up from a exhaust shop in castle hill industrial area for 20bucks he bloted it in and it sounds awesome, however he found it a bit loud inside so he has his muffler back in now but always has the option if he wants to unblot and throw in the straight through if hes in the mood every so often

sounds like a semi-trailor though its so nice

mate has a turboed 1hz in a 75 that's ripped the exaust off basically from the turb back, sounds quiet enough untill he opens it up under load... then it's a little roary... but at least something drowns out the simex's. don't know how much boost he runs, but gives HSV clubbies a run for the money, and outdrags 350 chev powered cruisers up hills

Sound`s like the best thing is to get flang`s welded each side of muffler and existing pipe than straight through pipe also with flange`s than I have both. I had a 253 dunny door with 65mm pipe and extrators done at sutho which sounded sweet and a vr dunny with 65mm and extractors done by menai mufflers which was ok for v6. Ile have a word to sutho tomoro about price

Does a turbo diesel need a muffler?
No of course not, but any gain in hp would be marginal anyway, if anything it will just make cool wirring and hissing noises.

Do the police and RTA think you need a muffler on your turbo diesel?
I dont know, drive past one at full pace and see what they think.

Just fit a straight thru resonator. Removes the Boom and still sound smooth.

We had the D series Ford Turbo trucks over here with no mufflers.
I thought they came that way from the factory but it's a bit long ago to remember.
A 6 will always be quieter than a 4 through more firing pulse's.
