I've got a FJ45 that's now got a 2H in it that is in pretty good condition, but I've been getting a bit worried about how well the standard under the bonnet air filter is keeping out the dust which is something we've got plenty of in far north western Queensland. I started thinking about getting another filter today after seeing a L/C wagon like mine in town today with Vic plates & one of those barrel shaped filters up on the guard, the whole setup looked new. Can some one give the info on these types & any other types of filters that are available & where I can get one, please 

This isn't the big city, I live over 900k's from the nearest major city (T'ville) & there is just not the big 4wd specialist shops everywhere like there is in the south, nor are there any vehicle wreckers here to speak of as that group of people that like mucking around with earlier model vehicles can be just about counted on the fingers of one hand. Probably what I'm after is sold here or can be ordered but it makes it difficult not knowing names of the different filters available, their suitability & so on & I'm certain no one here would stock such niceties as "finer filters" 

your other option is to order and install a snorkel and a finer/uni filter with a snorkel insert. check out uni filters website. they will deliver anywhere in oz and over seas

Thanks, Ill ring that number that Skootin gives, I decided not to ever put a snorkel on the old girl cause I've noticed if you hit water on a road that's any kind of depth it comes up over the bonnet & kind of breaks like a wave on the roof I reckon having a snorkel sitting there at roof height would be just asking for trouble & would suck water straight into the engine. We don't get a lot of rain up here but when it does the most unexpected places can get flooded & quickly so you don't always get the chance to slow down.

Since it is pretty dusty up that way, your best bet would be fit the snorkle and put one those round donaldson precleaners on top. This way you want get water in.
But if you do get a snorkle just turn the snorkle to the outside of the car.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
I do not recommend a uni/finer filter for heavy dust use. ALL the dust that comes in the inlet sticks to the filter, instead of the cyclone effect of the filter housing throwing a lot of it to the outside.
In very dusty conditions, "oiled foam" filters become very maintenance intensive.
There is a small drop in performance, but the donaldson pre cleaner is exc for heavy dust, and dramtically reduces filter element replacement.

I second this, they work very well, and many even come with a pressure drop guage that tells you when the filter elements need cleaning/replacing. Since air filters work more efficiently the more dust they collect it is better to leave it as long as possible unless you notice a significant decrease in performance.

I didn't realise that Rock God was referring to a particular brand of filter earlier when he wrote "finer filter" cause I went to Autopro up here & they can order them in. I hadn't read what Steve was saying about them at that time but I'll give it a go, supposed to arrive here on Monday. Another place could order the Donaldson setup but the bloke reckoned that none of the pipes to hook it up with were supplied & that because of the acute angles of the bends needed there was no one up here with the gear to bend them, so I shelved that idea. I think the finer filter will be okay cause although it can be pretty dusty here its still not as bad as around central western QLD when its dry & its pretty unusual ever to be following another vehicle which I think is where a lot of the dust an engine ingests come from. What started all this concern about dust was that I had noticed a film of very fine dust on the floor of the filter box inside the filter.
