Power steering Box or Pump what is the problem ?
The story gos I have 60 series steering with a chev power steer box i have had it for 3 or 4 years now with out fail . In Nissan trials b4 Xmas i blow a high presser hose and lost all the fluid so i made the oil recirculate through the pump and drove it home about 8 or 900klm heavy armed this rebuild i had pump rebuilt as it hummed etc bad after Nissan trials and didn't feel right .
now it has been back on road a few weeks it still didn't feel 100% but it worked fine at weekend it has basically stopped working if you rev it up and turn steering above ideal it works better but some times notchy and pump hums it is getting worse the pump is full of oil no leaks any where even in box if i jack up wheels and grab wheel and turn from side to side it turns through cycle free from side to side
how do i determine if it is pump or box ? thanks in advance for your thoughts Darren

P/Steering
If its noisey i would say its the pump you need to test the pump flow and pressure, flow ??????, pressure should be around the 1500 psi mark steering against the steering stops. If the pressure is down it could be the box bypassing to test for this you need to measure the flow whilst steering fom side to side if the flow is down it would be the pump is shot, if the flow ok the box could be bypassing and hense the pressure wont come up either.

how would i test these my self at home ? with basic type tools or would it be best to take it to a say a brake and clutch joint to test it for me ?
i was thinking mabey i could use some clear hose and put it to each side of box and see if the oil passes each way when turnig the wheels each way would this tell me any thing ?

had a similar thing on my feroza. it turned out to be the pump was worn out. the pump fins wernt sealing against the outer pump wall and letting pressure drop when revs were down. im guessing even when revs are up its really hard if there is a heap of pressure on tyres like the pwr is not working.

that is right but some times it locks up as well which indercates it might be the box

Fit another pump and try it out.
I have seen pumps fail after stg box o/haul and the "mech' didn't top up the fluid after the inital fill and rev'ed it up whilist turning the stg wheel,so they are sensitive to fluid shortage.

yep i did that to mine when i put it on the road a couple of weeks ago

dow50r wrote:Hi dump the oil and run some normal hydraulic oil, which is twice the thickness to power steer. If it comes good, you have wear in the pump. I would expect this, if you travelled 8-900 kms with no oil cooling, just pumping round, your seals inside will be brittle from heat...
Andrew
i had the pump rebuilt since that but have never touched the box i bought it out of a wrecking yard and fitted it 4 or so years ago if i try the thicker oil thing is it possible to damage something that at present is ok ? Thanks guys keep it coming as i am at the stage where i am thinking of just pulling them both out and sending to a mate in Albury to go over, the hassel is i have to remove the whole front clip and tube work to get the box out . Thanks again Darren

the_smoo wrote:not a hydraulics guru.. but if you rebuilt the pump, and now it feels as if you have the same or similar problem then maybe it was a dodgy box that caused the problem in your pump in the first place?
I asked the same question last night to the bloke that rebuilt the pump and it is very possible that the origional prob the blown hose was that indeed time will tell

I blew my pump over a year ago. I just struggled with the steering until recently when my shoulder started to bother me. That whole time I did nothing to the system. It was just pumping away empty. So last week I headed down to Fulcrum and got a new pump. After removing and cleaning the resevoir I lifted the front end. With the engine off I proceeded to turn the wheels left and right while I kept topping up the resevoir. Once it wouldnt take any more I did the same with the engine idling. Now its fine. Surely if my steering box held up for over a year oil free that yours should be ok after 800km. If you just filled up the resevoir then started her up maybe the pump ran dry for just long enough to stuff it again. Im no tech guru, just an observation drawn from what I've just been through

that was my inital concirn but i think it is more than that i might try the hydraulic oil thing that dowel sujested

Turns out i stuffed the recoed pump
no ones fult except mine
while it ran with no oil in it i thought it had air in the line i tured the wheel from side to side half a doz times on first start up but it put all the oil i had in pump in box and that was enough to wreck it the pump it is now recoed im getting box done at same time hope to get it all back this week and refit it all at weekend
should be like new now if i dont manage to wreck it again

When it is all back together, fill the reservoir, start ther motor and turn it off, refil, start/stop, etc etc till it stays full. Then start, turn wheel till you hear it moan, stop motor, fill, start turn some more, etc etc etc.
In the end, you will have a reservoir full of oil and no groaning.
Caryards down here do the hydraulic oil thing to the worn steering systems...works a treat...just like a few drops of brake fluid in a gearbox stops leaks for a while.
