If it's gonna be a basher, then I don't reckon build quality would be of much concern. Otherwise, as long as they're not all rusted out, they're tough old mules, and with a center-drop divorced transfer case (same as used in some MQ Patrols), they do lend themselves nicely to swapping out the IFS front end with a solid axle, you can use a left or right offset diff, bet an MQ Patrol's C200 would be a dandy choice.
The 85/86, in the USA at least, is the best of the bunch. New bed design is much less prone to rot. Most stateside models had a Z-series engine of some sort, with some L-series and SD20 (diesel) models.
Diffs were H190 (baby H233), and C200 in the rear, R180 in the front. There was even a full-float dualie (double rear wheel) 1-ton model, apparently a variant of the H190 best I can tell.

Nissan 720s
Frined has had one for a long time and it's a dual cab with canopy. Other than a heavy whack in the side from an errant camry it's done well....
He does a lot of road driving but still likes to go out and play bush.
The IFS is a limitation to some degree but there are substantially worse setups around.
Everything said about Pathfinders and Navaras pretty much applies to 720's, except the 720''s have more reliable but slower older tech motors.
The SD25 and SD27 arent bad motors, just a bit gutless pulling a loaded 720 dualcab. But that's the price of diesel anytime.

Looks pretty sharp, can't say as I've seen many 720s stateside that look that good, most have become pretty scruffy-looking by now.
In search of an MQ (offset) H233b rear, housing only preferred, plus a complete GQ or GU front (4.6 ratio ideal) to be shipped to the US. Cheap! Email/PM if you can help.
i had one years ago. i hydrauliced the diesel that was in it. pulled it out through it over my left shoulder and drop a L18 out of an old race car into it, never looked back.
to fit bigger than 31x10.5x15's you will have to body lift, and even the 31's are a tight fit.
