Snapped axel

Snapped axel
Hay all
Had a shit of a day, was out playing and snapped my second axel for this year. Was locked and doing a hill climb lost traction hit the noise peddel and BANG towed home again (farking ford too). Just wanna know has anyone else done this?
if not what am i doing wrong?

Cut down Sierra cab on extended LWB chasie running, Hilux front and Bundy back, with a 4AGZE should be finished about umm soon. A 60 Series work truck and some go fast toys too.
Mike (Redrocket) snapped an axle a few years back, attempting a hill climb on his DAP course (he'd already made it once, but he just had to do it again! ) If you do a search of this forum I think he mentioned it somewhere. I haven't seen him online for a while now, but you could try a PM?
Good luck,
Scott
Good luck,

Did the rear right earlier this year aswell.
Trying to climb a step, slid backwards a little way and gave it a bit of right foot to get moving again. New 33's, rear diff lock and all the weight on the back of the vehicle was a bit much of a combination for the axle shaft and she went bang.
With any luck you won't have done any damage to your locker and replacing the shaft is not that hard to do on your own.
Good luck

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading
Yep I was sitting in the passenger seat with Noisey when that happened, I mentioned to him earlier that it is a week spot in the 3.0 V6 and then it happened, I should have shut up
I broke 2 in about 6 months with 33"s and a rear locker.
1st the right side which caused a lot of damage to the locker and then the left side which wasn't as bad (I suspect it was shockloaded from the first breakage). Since the Detroit went in I had no probs and I think this is the key as power is balanced front to rear taking the load from the rear axles. With the open IFS and locked rear all the power is transfered to the back leaving the front doing sweet fark all.
Never the less I'm having custom alloy axles made up now by Geelong Diffs to make absolutely sure these can twist a full rotation before they will break. Cost is $1000 for the pair (it cost me $1300 to repair the damage caused by the first breakage).
Axle sizes :-
2.6 & 3.0 V6 = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter
3.5 V6 & 2.8TDI = 31 spline, 35.5mm diameter (no one I know of has broken one of these).
There is no way 3.5 V6 axles can be used in the 3.0 V6 as the side gears just haven't got enough meat to be re-broached to accept the larger axles.
A friend of mine carries a dummy axle (previously broken axle cut down to about 6") as he has broken a few in his 3.0 V6 swb.
Most of the time the damage is caused by the broken axle flopping around in the housing chopping into the diff/locker centre if you keep driving as they tend to break right at the start of the splined section.

Out on Saturday, climbed a rock face no trouble, came back down and a guy said "do it again, I'll get my camera."
So I tried again and couldnt get up ,dropped the tyres to about 12 psi and tried again harder, danced on the rear with the power on and BANG.
Drove her home going clunk clunk etc, will only move in 4wd.
I wonder if a Hilux diff is stronger, they don't seem to brake axles, and they have a central pumpkin. Also would match the diff I intend fitting to the front soon.

A 3.0 V6 9" centre is much stronger than a 8" Hilux centre so is the C&P.
The 8" Hilux centre is almost identical to the Mitsu 8" front diff centre.
The Hilux axles are stronger though at 30 spline, 33mm diameter.
The closest would probly be a Ford 9" that has similar size axles to a Hilux.
The main reason a Hilux doesn't snap axles is that a CV or C&P will go first.
