Tranfer Case Noise, Please Help
My tranfer case was making a squealing sound and of course the bugger was dry. Filled it up with the right stuff and the nosie was reduced but is still there. Do i need to recondition it. Looking for a cheeper option.
Okay, after a reminder, the 4wd is a fj 40 with 5.0 Holden motor and T700.
Its hard to say what is wrong with it from here, but I would say that you have properly run a couple of bearing in there somewhere.
So if you have some sort of idea to what your doing , I would be pulling out the gear box (makes working on the whole lot a lot easier) when you get the whole lot out, start to rip the transfer case apart and start to check the bearing, sincros etc to see if there stuffed. It could just be a matter of a few buggered bearings, but it could be more. Alternatively, if you do source another transfer case, well the whole lot has to come out and apart anyway, so you might as well see if you can fix the one you got.
Well that’s what I think, but its hard to give you a diagnosis from tas. It could just be a few bearing, which is the easiest fix you could hope for.

Maybe, but i dont think one person could lift and bolt a T-case in place under a 40.......
Actually no, almost all the t-case had to come apart to get it away from the gearbox anyway. I suggested that he take the gearbox and T-case out to make the reassembly easier to work on. With both my 40 T-cases (both the earlier style and newer 60 series) I had to pull out all the gearing, to get the bolts that are behind them. I would like to see someone reassemble something like that under a 4wd.

But yeah, you have 3 or 4 bolts that are behind the main input shalft to the T-case. and its pretty hard to get them undone when its on the floor, let alone when its up and under the 4wd.
