3/4 elliptics???

Post by Elmo »

Im slowly doing up my 82 hilux dual cab, having just installed a set of 4in lift springs, to compliment 2in body, diif lock and 33's..

after more travel as we all are, i was checking out a US site, where he used the main leaf out of his original springs turned it upside down and bloted it to the chassis, knocking off the rr shackle hanger and bolted the shackle to the upside down leaf, giving just massive amounts of drop..

question: do u reckon this could really work, and would it be advisable, what else would you have to do,

it just sounded too inviting, esp now that i have a spare set of leaves

open up the spring clamps

remove leafs

do you want to go bigger tyres, you have a bit of lift for just 33's

I have had 3/4 setup on my Zuk for about 6-7 years now. It works great but I'm still spua so I don't have spring wrap isues. 3/4s behave very differently on spoa so a track bar will be needed.

I have found that the travel is good, handling is no different and the ride has softened

would you have to run a panhard rod to locate to rear diff?? also do you need something to locate the springs under compression? /=\ like two plates to guide the 1/4 leaf into place.

No you dont, just a track bar.

Ive had 3/4 elliptic for 4 months now (but havn't tested it on reallly chalanging tracks yet) and like it because because it was a fairly easy mod and i get good travel. I have found it is very predictable flex but will ive you more body roll on road.

I haven't had too. I have found that there is no lateral movement with the 3/4 spring setup. SPOA maybe a slightly different story but as long as your top spring is securely mounted. I have used two ubolts either side spaced about 100mm apart, the flat of the spring is centred between these two and I have about 75mm past the u bolts

Even in a soa situation the axel is located securely enough for a pan hard par not to be nessisary.

I see what you’re saying here, mainly because I have S’ed and bust a fair share of leaf packs before i placed a trac bar in.
If i undertake this set up, are there any other problems to watch out for with a SOA 4wd?

so even on a hilux where the vechile came standard as spoa, then you'd still reccomend fitting a ladder bar, or just for trucks that have been converted to spoa???

On any 4x4....it is needed or you'll ~ springs and twist off driveshafts

What a load of crap, stock 4x4's don't trist off their drive shafts, and no 4x4 comes with a ladder bar stock.

SOA 4x4's with soft spring packs need ladder bars as there is more torque loading of the spring packs - but to say it is needed on any 4x4 is complete crap. I have seen SOA Land Rovers in the US with 454's that don't run ladder bars and don't have any problems.

It did not sound like it from your post. You said "on any 4x4", not "on any 4x4 with 3/4 elliptic"

Moderately soft, but wide axles so they still get good flex. But they are SOA - not SOA and 3/4 elliptic

how hard would it be to engineer a 3/4 rear setup in qld or would it be impossible? i was also playing with a bolt on type setup idea that would allow normal shackle mount for road driving and 4 bolts to go wheeling. but do u need to remove the rear shackle mount for the springs to work properly??

for the 3/4 you need to cut the rear shackle mount off the chassis. They are engineerabl in Vic. A guy in our club has them engineer approved by having them U bolted to the frame for on road driving
