40 5 spd prob
hey
have a bj42, it is having trouble with 5th gear, you get up to speed, put it in release the clutch and it crunches. when the clutch is fully released when you accellarate, it is as if it is in neutral, just reving not going
thanks

sure its not a 4 spd goodby reverse
nah, sounds like its not engaging properly. gives a slight crunch then bounces back off. take the plate off the floor inside. have a look at the selector rail. 5th gear selector is external from the rest of the rail.

it is doing exactly this, then you can slip it in easy, then it just revs.
will check the selector and all that
i was also thinking it might be the synchro
thanks mate
P.S. no it is not a 4 spd, hmmm

yeap. there is 2 little bungs with spring thingys on them. (one for hi range, 1 for low range) they look like oil fillers from the outside. someone who knows what they are talking about could explain what im on about better.

I've got the same prolem with a 60 series. I can get it into 5th but need to keep the revs up a bit when releasing the clutch. I'm hoping it's the selector rail or the nylon washer under the selector. The low range problem is fairly common when your transfer gears wear the corner off low range. Nothing to do with the 5th gear problem. The cheapest temporary fix is an occy strap.

on the out sid of the transfer is a nut .. near the transfer slecter.
if you undo this nut there should be a spring with a ball bearing ..
i have pull a lot of transfer aparts to find that the spring is broken or some times not there at all .(last person who rebuilt is forgot to put it back in .....
if you have any problems . give me a ring on 07 46696639 7 days

The little bung thingies you talk about are called the "detent" springs balls and plug, the two in the Cruiser transfer are 2WD-4WD which is located on the front transfer housing near the front drive shaft out put flange and the second is the HI-N-LO range detent which is located near the hi-lo lever on the rear transfer housing.
Wally
took the face plate off and had a look around
what are these selector rails you talk of, all i could see was the transfer, and a cylinder on top of that that housed the gear lever.
so we checked the engine mounts, turned out that might be the problem, repco didn't have any so we went round to dumbdunce's house and made up a custom datto mount, that broke on the way home.
it was so bad that the engine was lifting up and coming back down on the radiater fan. So that was pretty fun.
so just waiting for my part then we will see what happens
a big thanks to Monty for working his ass off for me
