NL Front Wheel Drive!!!???

Post by RASPAS »

My NL shorty becomes Front Wheel Drive
(with the 1st difficulty I find) as soon as I engage the 4H.No wheel spinning at the back...nothing.I gess this is something that it has to do with the gearbox.Am I right?Has anybody ever had to face the same problem before? What is it? With the 4HLc & 4LLc engaged works properly. *PS*I don't think is necessary to mension that I have F+R arb air lockers installed a while ago.

Is your rig a 3.0 V6 or 3.5 V6 ??? The reason I ask is that there is no rear ARB locker for the 3.5 V6 and the NL model is a 3.5 V6 SOHC version.

The super select t/case has a centre diff with viscous coupling in the Gen 2 versions it distributes power 33:67 front to rear when in 4H (centre diff unlocked).
In the Gen 3 (current) models the centre diff is different (planetary gears) which distributes power 50:50 front to rear when in 4H (centre diff unlocked).
If you are getting drive only to the front wheels in this mode something is wrong with the centre diff/viscous coupling assembly.
I'd make absolutely sure this is actually happening I'd put jack stands under the front end (lift the front wheels off the ground) and try to drive off them in 4H (centre diff unlocked).
Hope this helps.

NL's Rear ARB Air Locker Coming From Cyprus!!!

Post by RASPAS »

Hi Frank. Thanks for replying.I've sent a whole article last night and when i submitted it has been lost.Anyway my paj. is a'98 v26-nl-gen2.5
2.8td swb gls.U r 100% correct that there is no rear arb air locker to fit my type of paj. => 2.8td or 3.5 v6 due to the huge axles(35.5mm diam --31 splines). What I did... I purchased a rear arb air locker that fits on a triton pick-up & with some modifications I've put it in(change axles 30.5mm-28splns etc) and believe me it works perfectly!!! Its an "RD46" I think.I also had the RD110 installed about a month ago and now my silver- shorty from 2-3x4 became a "4x4".Hay Frank r u there?Has anybody else got the "same" or i am the only person in earth that is running a Rear ARB Air Locker on his ""NL"" ????????????????????????????????
Please...I hope am not alone...on EARTH !!!
***Anyway Frank I'll check what you ve said & I 'll keep you informed.
Thanks.

Yeah your the first person to do this that I know of.
It has been discussed before but nobody has actually done it.
Just for your imfo I gave ARB a 3.5 V6 rear diff (thanks Ian) so they can develop an airlocker, hopefully it will be released next year sometime.
That would be quite a weapon - swb 2.8TDI & twin lockers :D
