Mechanical Diff locks

Post by TEXAS »

Ok, first things first! DO NOT even mention the words "air lockers" in this post please. I know there good and blah blah blah, but there so god damn expensive.

Anyway, I would like any comments from the people who are running mech lock, either front or rear (dont care what brand), if they have any probs with breaking axles or the pins in the diffs them selves. I was thinking of running them front and rear. (LN61 Surf)

Any general comments on the mech locking diffs will be welcomed as well.

I know there are heaps of threads that go into the argument about air v's mech, but i would only like to hear from the people who are running mech diffs in toyota and in particular the hilux/surf type trucks.

Cheers.

yeh got lock rites in me lux..run em for years best thing i ever did gettin em..takes a bit gettin used to driving with them and they make a bang every now and then but never had any problems!...I tell a lie..the one thing i would change is to use a solid spacer on the pinion and shim it rather than using a crush sleeve as after a while (not real long at all) the crush sleeve crushes (dah) and the diff gets sloppy.apparently this is a problem for most mech. lockers

Are you after an Auto locker or selectable locker because they are both mechanical.

Selectable- Other than an Airlocker you have the choice of-
Jac Mac reputed to be the Best Option but $$$. Personaly have no experiance in these.
Factory Electric locker. Also a little expensive but hard to get aftermarket gear ratios.

There are others on the market but cant think of them at the moment.

Auto-
Detroit,AussieLocker,Lock Right,Loka,???

From my experiance with the Auto lockers you get what you pay for and they can be very unpredictable. If they are Cheap its because they are CHEAP!

Mechanical Diff locks

I was planning on installing them myself, and have been able to see a few websites that have them fairly cheap. Possibly get 2 lockrights landed for about AUD$800. Have wrote an email, but none of them have got back to me yet, maybe they dont want my business.
