Gear Reduction
Gear Reduction
What are the other options (other than a rockhopper) for reducing the gear ratio in a 98 coily keeping in mind that i am very much on a budget
smaller tyres
You are pretty much stuffed with the coily for gearing options. You could get a 1ltr t/case and adapt that to fit. Of course if you need someone to do the work for you there goes the $. If you can do it yourself the costs aren't too bad, just need to find a t/case and the bits needed. there have been threads about this swap very recently

Ransom note = demand + collage
you could get a 1 litre transfer case for about 350 at most
and you would also need the jack shaft and you can bolt that in and you will get a 12 percent reduction

TOYZUKI 96 coily zook,lux diffs, 3 inch suspension lift,3 inch body lift, 33'sMTRS,series 4 hopper,power steer,twin air lockers,4 LINK front and rear,2 inch spacers(GOT WIDTH)
What are peoples opinion about changing the transfer case and also changing the gearing as set out in the link below
http://ironbark.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au/~jeff/xfer2.htm
Would this be very difficult or somewhat doable ?
How hard would it be to get the necessay clusters/gears and where could they be sourced from?
Thanks

I just did this over the weekend and it wasn't too expensive, with the help of some friends. $350 to get the gears pressed and welded, jack shaft and Maruti case where given to me. Other than that I just needed to source the WT flanges and move the passenger side mount out 15mm. I've ended up with 5.16 low range reduction, and 12% high range red.
Most of the Suzi specific wreckers had gear sets, cases and flanges lying around. I'd say you'd get away with it for around $600.
Calmini do a great 5.16 reduction for about $450 US which comes with everything bar the case and jackshaft. Depends how low you want to go.

I dont want to sound negitive, but for another $300 or so you get professionally made gears with a warranty ..

If any one could give me some more info on weather i would be able to do this with a 1L transfercase and if so what other gears/clusters would i need and what case they would come out of that would be very much appreciated.
Also if anyone can tell me of someone in sydney who presses the gears well and for cheap
Also also if any one has the bits lying around and would llike to get rid of them

Apparently late model 1litre trans case is the go (84 model). Try suzi four wreckers in Dunheved 029833 0216 for the parts.
As for warranty with gear sets mine were 8 months from reciept date less that by the time they turned up & no interest in warranty from the distributor when they broke.funny how factory gears lasted years & this sites fav gears didn't..
