Different Engine number on 308...

Post by the_smoo »

Heres the deal..

I have a FJ40 with a red 308 plonked in.. i bought the vehicle with the conversion already completed and i am trying to track some info on the conversion..

the conversion is not dodgy, as they have used a dellow conversion kit and all looks fairly kosher..

I rang VICROADS as the vehicle is unregistered.. I told them the VIN and engine number and they said that the engine number they had on there database was the same as the one on my engine, therefore they were happy.

there is no engineering mod-plate, and VICROADS told me that the mod was done a while ago, and that any eng cert they had would have been archived and couldnt be accessed :?:

PROBLEM IS, the engine number is one that has been re-stamped on the side of the block and does not look like a holden V8 engine # and the previous number has been punched out...

for what reason would it be legal to change the engine #?

The only thing i can think of that would make this legal is if the engine had been stolen and recovered but the original engine number had been damaged in some way. In QLD you can apply for a surogate number to register the engine again in a vehicle.

Maybe the block has been milled (which removes the engine number) and a new number was issued after block was x-rayed to check correct old number was there.

or as RUFF says

Years ago I was rebuilding the engine in an old Galant. It wasn't the original engine (swapped before I bought the car) and so there was no record of the engine number once the machine shop faced the block. I called SA Transport (or whatever they called themselves back then) and they gave me a new engine number over the phone - S90006P (issued early January in 1990 - do you see a pattern here?) I was surprised by the total lack of concern.

If things are going your way, don't ask too many questions!

Good luck
I bought a 308 block from a swap meet, mainly for the rods, as it was a black vl block.
There was no number on it, so i went to the cops to have it checked out...they sent me to the RTA, who sent me to a Blue slip station, who said to me
PUT IT IN A CAR AND WE WILL CHECK IT FOR YOU....F'''k O''f..
No wonder things get knocked off round Wollongong
As stated b4, decking the block for legitimate reasons will remove the number...

there is also a number sequence that starts with a "P" ......stands for "POLICE ISSUED NUMBER" ( victoria only ) and is granted by Vic Police when dealing with recovered stolen motors.
I found this out the hard way :x

As for the engine number starting with a "Q"...... check this link out .....
