Just about to buy a snorkel for my 2k rodeo V6
couldn't find a Safari . . . is Airtech the only other choice?
where do you suggest I get it from (Brisbane area)
Im fairly handy. . . was thinking of installing mysel, do they come with good templates for cutting the hole in the guard? Could be expensive operation if I screw up the guard.
Anyone out there done their own install? got any tips and tricks
would appreciate your suggestions - cheers Zbuild

Been on hls out west so haven't seen this until today. I fitted a snorkel to my Frontera without a template (becasue no-one else would risk it). Used a 92 Rodeo diesel snorkel and would expect that fitting one with a template would be pretty easy. One thing that did bother me was the size of the hole you have to drill. Borrowed a hole saw from a friend. Wouldn't try it without a sharp quality hole saw. Take all of the protection measures you can (tape etc) in case you muff it. Good rustproofing needs to be applied also. Something I'm not sure some workshops worry about too much.

Posted a few pics when I fitted a snorkle to the Jack. It was fairly straight forward with the template. Just have a good holesaw and measure more then twice and cut once.

I'd believe that when you go and get it fitted. More likely the guy saw the t/d one and thought it was the same. I have just fitted a snorkel to my 2002 TF V6 petrol Rodeo.
It is an Airflow snorkel, which fits both petrol and diesel engines, made by gibson rm in melbourne (www.gibsonrm.com.au) and available through 4wd systems (www.4wdsystems.com.au) for A$289.
Fitting was fairly straightforward using a 76mm (3" holesaw).
The supplied instructions are crap and fortunately 4wd systems supply a section of pinch plastic - basically a flexible trim to fit around the outside of the external hole to tidy it up as part of the edge of the hole would otherwise be visible since the snorkel does not cover all of it. The template provided in the kit proved to be spot on.
You have to drill a SECOND hole through the inner guard about level with the REAR of the air filter box - but at this point there is a reinforcing seam of folded sheet on the inner guard that you also have to drill through.
If you have airconditioning, there is also a support bracket for the aluminium pipe running down the inside edge of the LH inner guard - this needs to be removed and repositioned rearwards in one of the other unused captive nuts available on the inner guard.
Don't do what I almost did and cut into the wiring loom AND the aluminium aircon pipe with the holesaw - both need to be temporarily repositioned out of harms way while you drill. DOH!
2 lengths of differing diameter flexible tube, a stepdown adaptor and hose clamps allow you to connect the short piece of 90mm tube to the air intake 180 degree bend at the front of the air filter box. Then via the stepdown adaptor to a longer length of 76mm flexible hose across the front of the air filter box, alongside the air filter box between the inner guard and the box and then through the inner guard hole you have just drilled to the snorkel. I removed the rest of the factory air intake tube including the swirl pot.
It does breath better - in fact the cold idle speed initially increased by a couple of hundred RPM when first fitted.
But why the snorkel could not be longer along the outside of the guard ie the hole positioned closer to the front of the air filter is beyond me. Would make it much easier to install with less bends!
Will take a couple of piccys soon.

I'm still trying to see if there is a Safari snorkle tht will fit the V6. I was riding around one arvo and saw an R9 V6 Space cab parked at a house, and it had what looked like a Safari, but I couldn't see the branding from the street. I'm wondering if it was off a Jackaroo or something.
This particular one was only 1/2 -> 2/3 of the guard as well. Not at all like the diesel model safari one. which is also full length.

Dani I recently got a quote from Gibson in Melbourne who make Airflow, for the V6 "pick up" snorkel.
It was $299AUD + freight outside of Melbourne.
Got to be happy with that, it's cheaper than the Airtech from TJM.
Going by noelp's post, fitting was pretty straightforward and the snorkel fits both diesel and V6 so I guess it's only the plumbing inside the guard that differs?

They are of the design that comes right along the guard and in next to the indicator.
Not for the V6 however.
Whether these could be adapted for the V6 no one will give an answer on.
The best I have found is this one.
The airtec from Petrol 4cyl and Diesel models of R7 and R9. Here someone has chopped a little extra guard out and made it fir a Mu, which has a guard hump unlike the R9.
The only problem is the internal piping. I haven't seen how this is layed out and if it can be suited to the V6 airbox.
There is a 2.8 diesel single cab R9 around Hobart which has one of these but I'm always heading in the wrong direction to stop and have a chat to him.

Same colour as mine, with the sport flares, and safari snorkel on a 3.0tdi. Still a lot of black plastic along the guard but that doesn't look too bad!
Might have to see if I can source a set of those flares thinking about it now
