baja claws vs MTR's in sand

Post by RB zook »

flame suit on :D i know i should search but fawk it

any way i have 31x10.5 mtr and 31x11.5 baja claws
which tyre would be a better choice for beech work

ive never driven on sand but my thoughts is wider is better

but the claws being more aggressive may dig in harder?

anyone had any first hand experience

Are the MTRs good on rocks? How dp they rate against other tyre types...

I thought of going with the MTRs when I am up next as I have heard some good stuff on them, but not 'compared' to others.

ATs would be better than both, on sand you want the least aggressive as possible.

Yes and no. I was actually serious about the claws on backwards.

We used to have probs on our farm with tractors digging their way to China on certain soil types even softer than sand, depending on their weight distribution. We had a set of "grass tread" tyres that worked well, but with flipped herringbone tyres things seemed to even better! Then again, RWD only, with water in the tyres, so YMMV :finger:

PM'd ya. ;)

By the way, in a Zook, on sand, with a rockhopper? - I reckon even if you ran boggers you'd be doing well to get stuck. :D Weeeell... Maybe an exageration, but you get my drift.

aren't these a directional tyre?
i thought if you just swapped wheels from left to right side of the vehicle, then the tread would be backwards?

i too always thought that the least aggresive tire the better, until last time i went to straddie with my mongrels on. no matter what i did, i could not bog the thing. here's the thread-> http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... grels+sand

so i'd go the claws

sand

Post by SiKiD_01 »

if its in the wet(er) stuff, imho it shouldnt matter that much.

i think its only in the real dry and soft sand that gets people. i can get stuck easily in sand with my 31" MT/Rs (2WD) at 35psi. the will just spin and dig. with 4WD at 35psi, i seem to be able to go anywhere but up the dunes. (unless at speed)
but when aired down to about 10-15psi, the vit literally floats over all of it.

i havent tried tyres that are more agressive, but i would think it depends on your driving style.

I've been running MT/R's for awhile now and i'm find them to be generally ok. I havent driven much sand but when I did I was wishing that I an A/T instead. They seemed to dig heaps easier and even with dropped pressures. Unfortunately i'm only lifted by two inch and the tyres are 235/75 so digging to find the harder stuff doesnt really work for me.

On the rocks they go very well. I did notice some small edges taken off the tread after some rocky hill scrambling. Not sure what to make of that just yet.

In the mud they go much better than A/T tyres but they seem to fall well short of typical M/T performance.

The last two 4WD monthly mags have excellent tyre comparisons in my opinion. They are well worth checking out.

I think in the back of one of them there is ever a small mention of reversing the claws. It's under the section where people write in their letters.

reversing claws is unrealistic for beach as you still have to drive all the way there on the road. And they suck backwards on the road.

Mtrs will generally not dig as much as a claw in sand but as with everything in hardcore 4wd it will depend a lot on what you are used to and what you can put up with. Also how heavy the truck is and how much power to overcome the resistance.

I have had mtr's and also now run xterrains. The mtr's dug a fair bit on sand but not nearly as much as the xterrains. Xterrains let down to about 18psi are great, though mtrs at this pressure where better.

In general the less aggresive tyre will dig less. I don't entirely agree with the bald tyre argument in the sand though. Need some tread to gain forward momentum, and at times dig out of trenches etc

I certainly would not worry about using chunky tyres to 'dig down' in the sand situation as you could dig all day and just keep going down on the soft stuff.

If you cannot afford to have two sets of tyres/wheels, get the most aggressive you can afford and live with the trade offs. You will appreciate the more aggresive tyre in most situations. Let em down heaps on sand and you will be fine. As mentioned a suzuki is a beach weapon anyway cause they are so light.

Get back up on ya throne lord shonky..
lords were usually high and mighty

MTRs I used at Robe were awesome. Didnt get stuck, but we did play with low pressures all weekend.

pressure and accelerator are critical on sand. just dont go stickin the slipper into it and you should be fine.

I've driven with both MTR's and Claws on the sand. The MTR's were a bit more forgiving. With the claws, as soon as the wheels started spinning your were digging to China. The claws needed to be aired down more.

I dont agree with those who say a non agressive or bald tyre is the best. The only time this is true is when the wheels are spinning, which means they dont dig as much. An agressive tyre will give you much more drive but if you push too much, its digging time.

M/Ts work fine on sand, sure if your stuck and keep on the gas your gonna end up sitting on the chassis, but you would with an A/T anyway, it would just take a few seconds longer

YOU BLOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are camping on a beach and you want to know the best tyre! you Dudelux!!!!!!!

anytyre will get you on at the birubi end near the tavern where we are going on the beach dude!
thats where 4WD MONTHLY go to test the new cars. if they can get those soft roaders in and out you will be sweet.

my junk is twice as heavy as yours, with only slightly more power and open diffs and it goes on and off the beach no dramas. stocko is not too difficult ryan you will blitz it.
In my honest opinion on the beach your best tyres are the standard suzuki 205's i had them on my zook and it loved the beach. then i got motorway muddies and it chewed in more then floated over it.

you will be sweet in ya zook. let ya tyres down, keep your revs up and your apples.

i know my 40 wont go up the steep dunes out there so i dont, but you might be right. although i saw one green feroza out there once and it got stuck going DOWN hill. heheheh.

You can get a Hyundai Excel on at the Birubi end. :D

But going off this you are talking about Stockton, in which case the MT/R's will be fine. Besides if you can find deep enough quicksand it won't matter which tyre you have, you'll be up to the sills and not going anywhere within seconds.
