Precleaner

I know this isn't a new topic and it has been talked about, but can anyone give me some feedback on hows their TD42 is running without the precleaner. I am keen to get rid of it, I figure one of those filters in the neck of the snorkle could do the same job? Anyone regret removing it?

Sadly no difference in power.... but looks better.
If I was doing desert tripping I would put it back.

After seeing how much dust i got out of my pre-cleaner filter i would never remove it.

I had the same experience as bogged on my GQ TD42, no change in power!
With the precleaner removed and the primary filter replaced with a K&N, the engine was a little more responsive and about 0.5L/100km better economy but not really any more power.
This is ok for everyday driving around town but on dusty tracks I put the precleaner back in, extra protection for the engine and the primary filter.

Right, well I think I'll leave it there then as I will probably be heading soomewhere up north this time next year and no doubt lots of dust will be encountered. Not worth bothering with by the sounds of it.

have a look at the outlet size on the precleaner box.
I think its about 1/4 of the inlet size.

I reckon to block off the bottom and cut a large hole in the center of bottom, and weld on a mount to allow full value for air.

or a custom precleaner box.

Yeah I've had a look at that and its a bit restrictive. Have you done anything about that with yours?

All of the Jap Import Safari's (Patrol's) we get here in NZ only have the primary cleaner on top of the engine. They do have the water trap thing inside the guard, but it has no filter. All of them run fine, so there shouldn't be any problem removing the pre-cleaner from yours if you're wanting to reduce the inlet restrictions.

Our roads/tracks probably aren't as dusty as over in Oz, so that may be why we get away with it? But the filter sock as you suggested would solve that problem.

The NZ new GU TD42-T trucks we get only have one filter also. Is a cylinder one in behind the LH headlight. Seems small, but seems to do the job....I assumed its the same as ones available in Oz??

On GQ remove whole assy. Replace with 3" hose, carry a spare main aircleaner element, change /clean as required .
