how do you replace a CV boot on a vitara

Post by SiKiD_01 »

i need to replace one of my CV boots, namely a left hand side inner. i've taken the drive shaft off the vitara, and its sitting on the workbench.

so how do you take the old boots off, and put the new ones on? i'm not sure if you have to take the driveshaft apart (CVs) or not, or is there a clip that holds everything together?

i should have asked this before i took the driveshaft off the vitara, as i'm stuck with no car tonight, and i don't really want to pay anyone to do it for me tomorrow.

thanks for any help.

i've never replaced a boot so cant help ya, but ya can drive around fine with no driveshafts in the front, just put a rag in the diff if its the one without the triangular flange

CV

it's the passenger side shaft, so the diff is no problem, its just that i've taken the shaft right out, which leaves the hub centre open on the inside. i could stuff a clean rag in there and drive around still.

anyway, i sorta found out that theres a retaining clip that holds the inner CV joint together, take this clip off, and things come apart, and boots can be replaced, its the same method for replacing the outer boot as well.

i'll see how it goes. i can get pics, but no where to post.

I must say i never had to change the boot as the CV kept blowing up quicker than they wore out.

guess how much a CV boot kit costs?

$12.85

compared to a second hand front drive shaft complete

$76.00

how much is it to replace a CV after you've blown one up?

I had just the front left CV Reco'd with 2 new boots put on, with labour for $165.

For that price it wasnt worth the stuffing around. For me anyway :)
