Things I wont do again.
Things I wont do again.
Last friday I finally got round to changeing the wheel bearing that ive been meaning to do for about 3 weeks. All was going good and the bearing had been tapped right down to the seat on the axel without sustaining damage (something I seem to be prone to). I slid the retainer over and just before I started to tap it I realised that I hadnt put the brake back on. tuned to turned to I managed to get the bearing off by tapping it back the other way but im sure it wont reach its optimul life span.
Then I came to bleeding the brakes, vice grips came out, (I had on a previous occasion rounded of the break bleeeder nipple) and proceeded to pump the pedal I heard a gushing soud and no pressure, then I went to have a look and the slave cylynder looked to be giving birth. Apparantly your meant to put the drum back on before bleeding.

I've never done anything silly, stupid or wrong in my entire adult life in the last 5 minutes
Before that, tho I did put my faulty brake adjuster back in, and threw out the good one I was meant to be putting in
and dropped the sump off my motor, before I'd drained the oil etc etc etc et al and so on, christover

funny
the worst is having the ability to take things apart and not know how to put it back together again....
...either that or....
.... having a lot of bolts and nuts/screws left over after you think you've completed the task.

my stupidest ones were tipping new oil into the motor and checking the dipstick and wondering why the level wasnt going up. Soon worked out what was going on when my dad pointed out all the oil on the ground!! Lesson learned, replace drain plug before refilling with oil!.
My other one was trying to drive away with the rear axle on jack stands!

could be worse, first time i did the same and forgot the backing plate etc
next two times (one for a mate) all went well
now tonight i just installed another bearing and made sure i didn't forget the backing plate , all is well , SO I THOUGHT , i put the backing plate on backwards lock collar and all installed , man was i pissed , and to think im a mechanic, so no go with tapping the bearing off .what a waste of $29

worst stuff around ive had i can remeber was when amate and i installed a transmission and torque divider into an old dozer for work about 2 hours drive away from the workshop , once we got it all in and buttoned up we got a phone call asking if we forgot anything ? it so happened we left the planetary gear set that goes onto the torque divider (between engine and torque divider ) back at the work shop its funny how quickly calm people turn into dangerous cranky bastards

i was putting my new wheels on and i put my car out the front and went back inside to store the old wheels but there was only 3 wheels lefti was mighty confused, i looked and looked then my dad walked into the shed and i asked if he had seen the wheel and he said that one and pointed to my neighbours driveway across the street. It had rolled from the front of the car past me putting a wheel on down the driveway over a stump and into their driveway. HAHA
anyway the thing i won't do again is loose sight of rouge wheels ..lol

silly stuff
i once had to replace an oil seal on the transfer for the front driveshaft. it seemed all pretty easy, simple and straight forward. so i proceeded to get under the vitara, undo the driveshaft from the front diff and pull it out of the transfer..... now little did i know that it would've been a good idea to drain the oil from the transfer first.
usually before i start doing anything to/on my vit, my old man usually queries me on my knowledge first.
but this time, it wasn't different, only the query was if i knew how to clean up a couple of litres of oil off my driveway and myself.
theres a few other situations i've found myself in, but this one makes me stoopid enough as it is.

rebuilt the engine in me old escort p/van one night and dropped it in and got it all fixed. started up first go dut as i drove it down the road for the first time i had some horible noises. turned out i forgot to tighten up a bolt on the flywheel and it was rattling on the pressure plate. so 1 1/2 hours later i had it out again and tightened and back in the car and all good and ready to go to work. only slept 3 hours that night
