80 series 5inch lift driveline probs. help please
Hi all
Can someone please help. I'm am desparate. Story goes like this.
Own 94 80 series gxl.
Recently done 5 inch suspension lift with caster correction plates. also put 315 (35 inch) tyres on.
Since all of this has been done I have a strange sound coming from the driveline.
It is not present when the car is driving or has power applied but only when floating between driving and coasting. when I go down hill and the car coast, still in gear it makes this strange gear sound for about 4 seconds generally.
Today I put it in to arb as they recentley installed front and rear airlockers.
They have diss assembled the font axle and checked everything and say that it is all spot on.
They also disconnected the front drive shaft and drove it. They said it still made sound but not as bad.
There is however no vibration present at all which I expected after the lift. Just this gear grating/ clanging like it is oscillating back and forth. Can anyone help, has anyone had this problem after doing such a lift.
Also can anyone recomend someone around brisbane who might know.
Desparate

Uni joints on rear shaft. As its a GXL (full time 4wd), i THINK from memory the rear shaft is slightly shorter than the pov pack (DX) part time 4wd. This shorter lengtth is just enough to put the U-joints at the wrong angle, hence the noise.
Some food for thought, i have a 1995DX, with 5" lift, no noises/problems at all. A mate on the other hand, has a 1994 DX with 6" lift, and has the noise you speak about.
Also, fill the slip joint/uni's up with grease, then see if it makes the noise

it sound like the front shaft . most 80 with a big lift fit a part time 4wd kit .
as any slight wear in the front drive line will make vib - sound .
fit a part time 4wd kit so your front shaft only spins when offroad .
when u lift your cruisert your front shaft angle is increast.
i think a kit cost around $500-00 unfitted .
marks 4wd sell this kit .
marks 4wd should have a reseller in your area .

mad cruiser when you sugest that the rear shaft must be slipping in and out what do you mean?
phill
Has your mate been able to find a fix
Rock hopper
As i said ARB reckon that when they took the fron driveshaft off it still made the sound although not as bad, therefore with a part time kit it will still make the sound.

I got the same noise on my lux- most noticeable coasting down hills on the freeway, and it does not come from front shaft, since I have part time 4wd.
My driveline is set up pretty severe- 6 inch suspension lift with 80 series diffs, meaning rear tailshaft is offset side to side as well as up/ down because the transfer case has output in centre.
Rear tailshaft has double cardan joint on t/case end.
Someone said the noise is from worn d/cardan joint, since I got one from wreckers.
But I got no vibes, and the noise is not loud so it doesn't bother me. If worse things happen, I'll do something about it.
Josh.

Sounds like transfer is worn, maybe gears. Try this, take front shaft out and drive around with centre difflock in. Could be too much wear/backlash in centre diff and as you coast the gears are chattering-vibrating because there is no load on them. with centre diff lock in this may eliminate the noise???
Could be wrong tho....
I aint a mechanic so this could be total crap but worth a try...

Slid under and grab a hold of your shaft give it a good jerking up and down. If it moves at all you may need a slip joint and uni's replaced consider a tailshaft spacer will move the slip joint back to it's original postion may only be a quick fix.Double cardinal joints don't give a lot more angle reduction. They are also expensive to repair.
I'm not stuck I'm over here!
Watch where you driven!!!
Watch where you driven!!!
BTW, my tailshafts are brand new jobbies, both being professionally extended and o/hauled- so that would surely rule out the uni's- but not the d/c.
The noise doesn't seem to be getting worse but haven't driven it much.
It could very well be the t/case- hadn't thought of that. Will look into it.

when i mentioned tailshaft slipping.... when doing a big lift, you tend to stretch the tailshaft, you should be able to see a wear mark on the end of it where the gearbox is. that will show you how much has been stretched'.

I put 7" springs under my cruiser and i had the sound that u have....
I put a double cardon joint in the front shaft and the noise has stopped...
I have no problems with my rear shaft and it is still standard..
Just some food for thought.

I have a 6" lift on my 80 & have no problems at all.
You say you have the caster correction plates fitted, these wernt available when i did my lift. I have fitted aftermarket caster bushes instead that change the diff angle.
So im thinking wouldn't you be beter off adjusting you diff angle with caster bushes or other means before you upgrade your tail shaft.
What have you done about you sway bars ?

GXL Turbo Diesel 80 series- 6" King springs + Rancho in-cab kit- 35" BFG Muds Twin ARB airlockers.
My 80 has a 4 or 5" lift i had no vibs till i corrected front caster then at coast it made bad noises etc so i replaced three unis as they had wear play in them 2 very little one bad now it is all good i got a cardnal to put in but at this stage arnt going to bother with it .
If you can not get there in a 4wd its not worth looking at
Still trying to fix problem.
Check out web site http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/driveline/
Found a bit of usefull info on drive lines and joints.
Have a read, I reckon the problem has some thing to do with the fact i have diferent angles at pinions to transfer and the varying speeds are working against each other instead of conteracting each other.
Solution front pinion is set up similar to the second diagram in article so i reckon i need a double cardan
however the back pinion angle is close to transfer case angle as shown in first diagram but still a few degrees out.
How can I rotate the rear dif back so its pinion sits flat.
