Help with buying a hilux

Hey

Got a mate that wants to buy a 4X4 hilux for a first car. Looking at spending 4-8 grand. Anyway could anyone suggest some of the good previous models, what you would expect to pay for them and if that model has any problems that you would expect to encounter. He's not sure if he wants desiel or petrol any ideas (which have enough power but still good fuel economy). Also if anyone has one for sale in the SE Queensland area your welcome to contact me by email.

I already own a nissan patrol (and dam proud of it) so I know what to look for in a four wheel drive but any further information on hiluxs would very helpfull.

go for a turbo diesel with solid front axle anywhere from 84 through to 94

First things First.Go for a live axel front which is all you could buy in that year.except the SR5 which might of had tosion bar.Im a diesel freak so i like the 2.4diesel in that year range.Power of this motor was nothing to blow your socks of but i believe if u put a turbo on this engine and boost it 6-8 ponnds with a minor fuel adjustment u will notice a fair difference,and still have the reliability.You can still pick up a good one off these trucks for that sort of money.Good luck.
If you look hard enough you might find a newer shape wich come out in 88 with the 2.8 diesel motor,but it had a blue interior terrible,changed to grey in 92 i think.Icurrently own a 96 modle 2.8 diesel hilux and very happy with it,with no problems at all.

hey beast tamer i will agree with shoe lux about the 2.4 d motor. i have a ln65 86' model SC luxie and love it...i picked mine up for just under $4000 ...it was from gladstone so a country car. ihave added some pics so u can see what ur mate can do to these models...i have a custom turbo running 12psi and 14 to 15 when 4x4ing. an exciting drive and i have had no troubles with my rig so far....another option for ur friend could be going to the government auctions to find a bargain or the police sale yards....the only think that hilux fail in is the 'j' arm for the steering....thats only a problem over 2inchs lifted though....

Just ont eh turbo part of the discussion - i am looking at buying a 96 manual 4x4 2.8D Dual Cab Ute - but i wanna boost it too. What sort of money are you looking at to have a turbo supplied and fitted/tuned up and ready to go?

How does this compoare with cost of super charger? I assume b0olt on super chyarger is just as easy on these motors as turbo?

Which is cheapest? I guess both will be similar in power increase on a stockie?

Mates got a 90 model dual cab, new paint, bobbed tray, roll bar, 2.8 turbo diesel, 33's mudders, not sure what money he's after for it, can get some pics if ya interested.

I put a turbo on my 2.8 for $1600, second hand of a surf, can be done cheaper, but I'm no mechanic, so i leave that to the pro's, definately worth doin for a lux, they are slugs without a hairdryer.

I often mention that my TD lux is quicker on 33's than my parents std lux on 29's so you do the maths and it is only running 7psi.

You can pick turbo's up for as cheap as $400 on this board alone but expect to pay up to $3000 on a new set-up fully installed
