Supercharger for 4.6 HSE?
Moderator: Micka
Supercharger for 4.6 HSE?
My boss wants to supercharge his RR, but the only company i could find (from Australia) that makes them doesn't answer my e-mails. Do you know about a serious company that builds supercharger kits for those vehicles?
Thanks in advance
Thanks in advance

I'm sure there are plenty of other companies too, JE Engineering and RPi in the UK, and probably many others.

Looks like a good, serious company, but they doesn't answer my e-mails.
I'd talk to RPi - I seem to recall a bit on their website about a dodgy supercharger installation that completely buggered up a perfectly good V8. Got to be careful.
Surely there's better ways to get more power out of a 4.6, they're not exactly short on horses to start with!
Did I hear someone say 5.2?
Oh check these pages:
http://www.rpiv8.com/projects-020.htm The dodgy supercharger install
http://www.rpiv8.com/faq-inj.htm Re-chipping instead of supercharger - if you're daft enough to *buy* an ECU upgrade
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=35&h=17&t=2507 Some more discussions on the subject for TVR cars (they used Rover V8's mostly)
In fact if you can find a TVR with a 5.0 or whatever it is they fit it'll probably be in much higher tune than a stock 4.6. And then you can stick a TVR badge on the back of the rangie - it's been done with a D90 over here at least once. There's one in a magazine this month that does 115mph using a (only slightly) modified 4.6 from RPi - he's still running carbs! OK, a Weber 500 carb, but even crummy Lucas EFi will blow that into the weeds.

Rangie spares kit is for the eaton supercharger....
Its basically exactly what RPi are advising against.
Landy_Man - were is a link to them cheap hairdryer superchargers, you know them jap import ones that have an electronic clutch them be cool
On a 4.6 it will be alittle under sized but it will still give 5-7psi of boost and deffinately get sum extra horses

Below is a link to another super charger manufacturer. Says their charger is suitable for engines from 2 to 5 litres.

I know that Andrew runs one on his Rangie and has been for a while...I believe it is a Commodore sourced 'charger which for all I know about Dunnydores is most probably an Eaton

any jap importer/wrecker should have em
I have nuthing against eaton superchargers in fact i think they are great but for the price of them compared to the cheap jap/import ones you mentioned (that can be switch on and off) I think there so much better option.
Plus RPi aint exactly a dodgy company and if they advise against them then I am gonna think twice about it
But if someone offered me one at a cheep cheep price i wouldnt say no

positive displacement supercharger kits arn't dodgy, only dodgy ones are . The RPI site is showing how this poorly made kit withs a crap manifold which doesn't give each of the cylinders equal air or somthin. If positive displacement supergharges were dodgy they wouldn't be standard fitment to such cars as jaguar and the holden super six. As long as you've got a decent well set up kit you're right.
It appears RPI only specialise in non-forced induction applications so appears to be just another advertising ploy. Any upgrade you get for your engine can be bad for it. Mind you I wouldn't mind one of those carbon fibre, twin throttle body manifolds they got.
As for jordan rover tech I've had the same problems with unanswered emails. I don't think they know they've even got email. Just ring them, they're actually very helpful when you talk to them.

Yes I agree, it looks pretty good. Much more professional than the "dodgy" conversion on the RPi website and using the M112 not the M90.

speaking of forced induction there is a guy on the 4wd monthly forum who apparently has a twin turbo 3.9l disco. I might email him and find out a bit more.
Whats interesting is he goes by the name of "discostu", my name on that forum is "disco stu". But I signed up first . Should change my name to that on this forum .

M90 on v8's have distribution problems because of the discharge port size/shape and location, but better designed manifolds can overcome this.
JRT's m112 setup apparently goes a long way to addressing the distribution problems and is working in better place on its compressor map = better efficiency, lower intake temps etc
Jap import superchargers off 1.6 - 2lt engines are never going to be the best solution on a 4+lt v8, to get any meaningful boost level your going to be overspeeding the charger which tends to destroy the gearbox on them, the rotors loose their coating at higher rotor speeds/temps, and intake temps will probably be very high. Has been done though with some degree of success apparently.
Cheers
Daryl

well, still no answer from the e-mails, and is difficult to me to call by phone because of the time's difference (i should call at about 4:00 am to contact them!) don't want to look too confident but anybody can call them and ask them the supercharger's price? I'll appreciate that a lot if somebody can do that for me.
Do not run a Roots type blower .. they run the rear cylinders way to lean due to the plate they sit on, if your serious about supercharging run a PRO charger from the us and set up a decent intercooler, if your going to do all that you will want to re map your fuel and ignition to take full advantage of the extra pressure and hp ... they use them on mustangs and vetts and when they run 15 psi they almost double the hp of the engine .... read www.procharger.com
get a P 1sc and you will have a very efficent and reliable engine and charger ...
I am going to fit it to mine as soon as i have time ...
cheers

I find it amusing that people are so drawn in by advertising ploys. Postive Displacement superchargers, when set up correctly do no harm to an engine, much the same as any well though out engine modification.
If your after a well made centrifugal supercharger kit I would look to CAPA. It is an Australian company that has the kits pre-made so your not fooling around with mounts and intakes. They mainly incorporate Powerdyne or Vortech superchargers. I have seen many of their installations that are over 5 years old and still going strong.
I'm not taking anything away from the prochargers as they to are excellent but I am yet to see a fully made kit for the rover v8's.
The positive displacement blower will give you better low down response (like stroking an engine) but any centrifugal supercharger will have some lag, not as bad as a turbo mind you.
When I get a chance to ring them about the Haltech computers I'll see if I can get a price for you, but if its for your boss take it out of your work time and call them.

I you like, PM me with the email message you wish to send to Jordan RoverTech and I'll pass it on. I'm down there most weekends (I look after the computer software for them), and no, they don't read their emails
AFAIK however, they don't sell "kits" - they do installs. Something about the legallity in Western Australia - a few high performance vehicle crashes have seen the local pollice monitor this sort of thing a lot more closely.
Cheers,
Gordon
