Post by Elmo »

Rightio here it is, i have a Daihatsu F20 SWB hardtop which i wanna build into a bit of a rock crawler and the good thing is i dont give two hoots about registering it
i've already chopped the body off behind the seats and gotten rid of the roof too, remembering im doing this on a bit of a budget, wanting some fresh ideas before i get too carried away?????

considering hilux diffs, SPOA, 3/4 elliptics etc etc, maybe evne some FOX Shox's and 44" boggers if i win lotto

Hilux diffs and 44's? youd be spending your budget on diff centres, axles, and CV's all the time.

Seeing as you dont care about road registering it. 80 series or GQ axles - plenty of them and more cost effective, cig lockers with 4.88's, swap in hilux gear box and transfer with rockhoppers, massive power steeering cooler and plenty of cup holders :D

Sounds awesome!
Cheers,
Dan.

If you're not going to register it then don't worry about many mods. I have an F20 as a paddock basher. Haven't driven it lately but it went most places when I flogged the %^$# out of it :D :finger:

well apparently qld transport will let me register it with all planned mod's, i just had to ring outta curiosity, and they were all for it, all i gotta do is modify the front diff to move the diff pumpkin inward so i dont have to outboard the spring mounts on the chassis, BRING ON THE GRINDER, PIPE BENDER AND MIG WELDER!!!!!!!!
oh and cause im doin a hilux motor conversion they want me to upgrade brakes and suspension too, funny thing is, they suggested to use hilux diffs too, which forces me to go SPOA, they actually want me to do a spring over, you gotta love loop holes in the law

Sounds like you are going to be pouring a considerable amount of money and time into this POS.

It's still going to be a cramped and uncomfortable little thing.

There might be a reason why no one has. Besides if you put a Hilux motor, diffs and suspension in it you could hardly say it's a F20 keeping up with the big boys :?

do it elmo, variety is the spice of life

dont just build everything by what you hear over the phone though. i know you said its not gonna be registered, so go crazy, but if you're even possibly thinkin of registering it, talk to an engineer first

Put the F20 body on a lux chassis  Half the work

Hope all goes well for you but I'd be a bit sceptical about cutting and shutting the diff :? If you're not worrying about rego then just outboard the mounts :)

Its thinking like this that has brought machinery forward to what we have today, if no-one ever attempts such things then we would still be swinging in the trees and eating bananas

Just because no-one else has done it doesnt mean it cant be done.
Go for it mate and the best of luck to you too, at the end of the day should you suceed only you will know the secrets of how to do such a thing, likewise should it fail atleast you had a go .......how many others can claim that .....

Make sure you get it in writing from them listing exactly what they will allow you to do. Nothing worse than doing all the work, then turning up to get it oked and having them deny the mods.

And once you get in writing that they're letting you do a spring over make sure you make a copy for me.

Sounding good.... good to see QLD Transport sets stuff down and then encourages you to find loopholes.
