my gearbox going to die

hey i've developed a wining/grinding noise in 5th and to a lesser extent 3rd in my G52 (thats wats in a LN65 with a 2L isnt it) i've been told all bearings are rooted and nerang diffs and gearboxs will rebuild it for around $650. is that a good price? is it worth looking at a second hand box from wreckers/ for sale section? or how hard is it to rebuild it myself?? (never rebuilt a box before) i've read in other threads that bearing and seal kits for them are only like $200-$300.
any help would be great i dont think its going to last much longer.

Exactly the same thing happened in my hilux,
grinding/whining noise got worse and worse, especially
when I got off power down a hill or something.
I went wheeling a few times and the gear-stick would pop out
of first alot too.

However, I did manage to drive it round for about 6 months like
that, and could have maybe milked another 2.

$650 is a good price for the work, I paid about $800 exchange
down in sydney, and they didn't do the best job in the world.

you wouldnt want to do it yourself if you havn't done one before.
I have a workshop manual and that section alone is about 15 pages long. And looks like ALOT of work.

G52 is a pretty easy box to cut your teeth on, but if you don't have all the tools you need already, you'll spend more than the $600 by the time you're done. pay the money and then you get a warranty.

hey thanks guys she's booked in tomorow, figured better get it done soon as i been told if u leave it too long ur up for new gearsets etc. also mite put a new clutch in if the old one is worn, anyone know any heavy duty aftermarket ones that are good??

you absolutely cannot go past Daikin, either Safari tuff (very high clamp force and offroad durability, fairly progressive) or 'Xtreme', high clamp force and durable, but not so progessive, in fact until you ger used to having 3mm of pedal being the difference between all in or all out, you think its a switch - either on or off.

getting rebuild right now, find out about the clutch when he gets it out. get it back on friday night and go for a play at ormeau on saturday mabe. anyone else goin out? hopefully i wont break anything this weekend last couple of weeks have been bad; steering coupling, gearbox :?

Yeah go the Daiken,
I had the Safari Tuff or whatever it is fitted about 1.5 years ago,
and it still feels practically new. PLENTY of life left in it.
I have changed gears while the car was submerged to the bonnet
several times back when Jackos was the go, and it never let up on me.

got the truck back on friday, all fixed. yay. ended up just getting a standard clutch as there wasnt a heavy duty one on the coast wen i needed it. but for $82 (gotta love trade price) i can burn out 3 before i could buy a daikin. :lol: whole job ended up costing me $860 for all new bearings, seals, 4th gear sincro, rear main seal, machined fly and clutch.
not too bad i thought. only thing is the shift from 2nd to 3rd is different now is that bad??

different how? does it crunch or clang or baulk or is it just tight?

its not crunching or anything, you just have to find 3rd and it slots in whereas before all gears were fairly loose and you could just throw in the general area of 3rd and it would go in. all are tighter, especally 5th and neutral is very loose compared to before.

Yeah that's pretty much what mine was like too.
That's what they are supposed to be like I guess.
Once you get used to the "notch-iness" off it, you'll
realise how much stronger and tighter it feels,
especially off the road!

Word of note however, my gearbox got real loose real
quick, and it turned out that the bodge-masters that reco'd it
the first time, had not put a nylon bushing in correctly and it failed
prematurely, but after I had that replaced properly, it has all been sweet.
So keep an eye on it, keep your receipt, and get them to fix it under warranty.
