165A MIG Welder

Post by stuee »

Looking at getting a 165A MIG Welder (CIG) and was wondering what thickness steel this sort of amperage is good for? Would this welder cover most DIY jobs or is it worth upgrading to something like a 215A MIG.

Cheers

I've got a 170 amp SIP coppermate and the manual recomends a max of 8mm plate. Have welded 5mm no probs.
Custom body work by trees and rocks...

Always buy the biggest you can afford. I was looking at new 200+ Amp welders over the last week or so and was looking at new ones for around the $2000-$2500 range. I ended up buying a second hand WELDMAC 245 today that has just been serviced for $750 it is a Single Phase Welder.

Never thought of buying second hand. So what does a $750 service get you? Is this like a full recondition? Also how much did you end up paying for the actual welder if you don't mind me asking, and what did it come with?

Sorry i paid $750 for it. It has been recentlty serviced. Bought it through a mate that works for a sheet metal company. They were buying all new machines.

Cheers. Guess I'll keep an eye out in the papers for second hand welders.
