diff ratios for GQ SWB
diff ratios for GQ SWB
THis is for a TB42 on gas
i got 3.9s on my car at the moment and it came with 31s
currently i run 33s on the road and 35s off road, would diff ratios's would people recommend?
i have been told to go 4.6s but will running 33s on the road just increase the revs to high and drain the juice.
This car is a daily driver and spends more time on the road than offroad by far.
I dont mind a sllight increase at revs with changing ratios, but i dont want a big one that will completely stuff up my road driving (over reving)
Also my next set of racing slicks (road tyres) will be 35s, but that still about 1 year away.
i know genuine rear and aftermarket front is the go, just need to decide on which ones.
at the moment i am doing 2400rpm at 110 after taking in consideration of the speedo being out, where with the 31s i was doing 2600rpm, if that means anything.

Re: diff ratios for GQ SWB
on diesels its 300rpm per ratio ...
Put some 31's on see what RPM you get at 100kph then 33s then 35s.
You can work out for yourself what ratio you want to go with.
3.9 with 31 is same as 4.1 with 33
4.1 with 31 is same as 4.3 with 35

Peter, you know my opinion
My mav had 3.9's, I replaced them with 4.3's and run 33's on the road, 35's in the bush with a turbo diesel.
Go the 4.6's!!!!!!
The 35x11.5 peed ( measures 35.5inch ) takes ALOT of turning compaired to my old 34's.
Buy some genuine 4.6's and I'll sway you my genuine 4.3's

GU 4.5, 35's etc

Pete just remember you car came from teh factory with 29"tyres.
SO the usual rule applies-
3.9=29"
4.1=31"
4.3=33"
4.6=35"
This only works for the 4.2lt engines

you have said this a lot, but my patrol and a mates mav, both came with 10r ( near as damnit to 31's) tyres. both are factory 3.9 ratio.

hottiemonster wrote:carl how do u know it came with 29s?
i know its wide wheel pack with flares, and the gold rims for the XLT models, since mine is XLT.
grrrr so confusing.
More mavs came with 3.9 and 29" tyres than any other combo. Mavs with 3.9s often had 31" tyres fitted as a dealer option (ie not factory) this is the wide wheel pack.
But I am sort of with Juzza on this, although you could do with some lower ratio's. Power i the key for most stuff in VIC (atleast with the stuff I have seen you drive). Maybe transfer gears maybe a better option and should be about the same price fitted.

hottiemonster wrote:transfer gears? how would that give power? it would only make gearing alot lower.
how much would a v8 conversion cost, including motor and fitted etc?
V8 conversion would cost lots would be better to go gears and a turbo I think. Maybe just going EFI would give you abit more grunt (mind you. you still have heaps more than me).
As for transfer gears it changes the way the power is deliverd. So therically you would have more torque multiplication. So you would actually get away with a higher finalle ratio, than std. As it is easier for the motor to turn the wheels (bit like taking off in 1st instead of 2nd).
p.s it has been a big night so this maybe wrong/

FYI, I have some 4.3 and 4.6 OEM gears that I'm looking to sell...

In search of an MQ (offset) H233b rear, housing only preferred, plus a complete GQ or GU front (4.6 ratio ideal) to be shipped to the US. Cheap! Email/PM if you can help.
