Head compression and torque
I remember seeing somewhere that head compression has an effect on torque. If a higher compression ratio produces more power, does it do so at the cost of losing low down torque?

Power is a result of Torque x RPM, so if your power increase its due to those factors changing. In this example the RPM limit isnt changed so to answer your question, No the bottom end torque will not be sacrificed, it should actually increase.
However, with that said by increasing your compression ratio you may end up a nasty case of detonation. Try fitting a new exhaust system focused on the torque side, ie/ long primary and secondary pipes, tune lenghted. Combine this with a higher flowing/cooler intake and you will have a better performing combination.
