You havent mentioned if you want to run AC?

My Rover V8 had a similar problem and i ended up moving everything back 30mm. You dont want to do this but personaly i think its going to be the best thing in the end.

Radiator in the back will be trouble. Airlocks are common and any speed over about 20klms you will loose any airflow unless there are some big ducts to suck it in.

Custom Radiators are a PITA as well as if you damage it finding a replacement isnt easy.

EB/AU falcon or late commodore rads dont fit as the steering box gets in the way.

You can trim the top of the radiator support out and flip the brackets on the diesel rad and bolt it back in but to do this you usually loose the bonnet latch so have to run bonnet pins. Then you also start to run out of room for fans in front. 2x10" fans fit perfectly in the gap between the lower and upper radiator supports.

From my experiances with Radiators in 4wds you need at least 50mm of clearance from any pullies because when you are trying hard to get up something and are comming to a sudden stop the motor usually moves forward on the mounts and will hit the radiator.

Sorry i dont have any good advise for you but its advise anyway.

In reply to everyone.

The engineer does not like the idea of cutting the crossmember as its structural and told me this as soon as I mentioned the idea. He also didnt like the idea of mounting it in front of the cross member.

Its a Gen2 Hilux 1984.

The only thing which will fit that I can seewill be a custom job, yeah a pitta if it gets broken, but i have not much choice atm.

I can't just have bonnet pins as Engineer said no to that too, ADR specifies I need to have a latch.

I dont have A/C never had and the gf comes wheeling anyway.

Im so ready to quit on this! Grrrrrrrr.

I wish I knew. These engineers don't seem the most jolly people, just stated everything striaght out with 'no' ot 'I dont like that idea'.

Is there a special code to talk to these guys or what?!

Ruff,
Was this a hilux you put the rover in? I ask as I am going some home work on installing a P76 into an 85 lux and am chasing pit falls. Did you use the stubby or long reach water pump crank pulley set up? What radiator did you use? Input appreciated. Did you have any dramas with permits?

interesting, depends on what engineer I suppose.

if he says NO, maybe say, what options do I have, or do you have any suggestions..

I Had a 4.4motor(P76) originaly. You couldnt pay me to have another. I ended up with a 3.9Disco motor. I used a 1970 P6B Rover sedan timming case and all front accessories. This is the shotest set up available for a rover but you need to custom make power steer pump brackets if you need power steer. I used a 3core deisel rad with the brackets flipped.

Hilux was a 93 so the Disco motor was no problem to compliance.

Tony,
What did you find so wrong about 4.4l? They have pretty impressive torque & hp figures for an old bus 143kw@ 4250rpm/386Nm@ 2500rpm unless I got the spec’s wrong. Maybe a little weak in the bottom end can be fixed with stud kits though, with a higher block, longer rods & longer crank throw, still basically the old Buick eng used in rovers. With the radiator you say flipped brackets? Does this mean so the bulk of the rad sits out towards the grill area. What year was the Disco eng was it later than the car 93 is this why compliance was piece of pi$$.

Thanx for your time mate

go the hack, mount the commo rad and worry about the engineer l8r, at least your truck will b going and u will have somthing to show the engineer rather than just ideas. Mounting a latch of some sort l8tr on will b easier than mounting a booty fab radiator.........

sounds good in theory.

at least your truck will b going and u will have somthing to show the engineer rather than just ideas.

But then he shit cans all that time and effort, and everythin' you have cut and hacked is fucked, what then?

Mounting a latch of some sort l8tr on will b easier than mounting a booty fab radiator.........
agree.

Do I understand rightly that:

- you could mount the stock radiator in the stock position and
- this would work but you'd be worried that
- the radiator might cop a whack from supercharger pulley in heavy off-road use

?

If so, my advice is mount the stock radiator in the stock position, get it engineered, then consider moving it forward in the future if necessary. Remounting your radiator in the future is not a safety issue; I don't think it would be irresponsible to do it this way.

This gives you plenty of time to think about the best approach, keep your eyes open for a 2nd hand alloy rad, get a few other people to look at it, whatever... and meanwhile you've spent nothing extra and you're car is on the road legally.

Yes Jason
good advice
then you could winch the engine backwith a wire rope the same as some cars used to.Morris 1000 s used to have a wire rope holding the gearbox back to protect the radiator

has anyone ever made a topmount radiator similar to that of a topmount intercooler with bonnet scoops? Probably a silly question, is it possible?
And why or why not?
Thanks
Just interested

what about a thin one similar to that of a skyline? 29mm thick. These guys run front mounted intercoolers too that would warm a bit of the air before getting to the radiator.
Not enough cooling ability?

a top mouht radiator would not get enough airflow and would make the car a bitch to work on. also it would act as a heat sink?

A single core radiator for 4wding purposes does not excite me at all. i doubt you could get enough cooling in any situation!

I will burn it for you ... but to save the enviroment ... I would strip it first ...

Si if I were to try this then I would defiantely be better off with the toibo version (gen 1 hilux)

Or maybe stay in the 4cyl area with an 18rgue ..
