Replacement engine for 92 Surf - 1UZ-FE - other options
A mate of mine has done the head in his 2.4L Surf for the second time now is wants to put another engine in.
We have been thinking of the 1UZ-FE. Has anyone done this and kept the Surf auto? Is it best to use a mid or front sumped 1uz-fe in a surf.
Is there another engine that is easily put into a surf that would mate to the auto?
Thanks

The Surf Auto and the auto that comes with the 1UZ are from the same family of boxes A34xx with the Surf having a A343F and the 1UZ either a A341E or A340E. In fact the A343F was mated to the 2UZ in the big Lexus LX470's in the late 90's so can certainly cope with the power of a V8.
What this means is the boxes can be mated togethor to form a hybrid version. This is exactly what I have done. Basically, I took the output shaft and transfer box from the Surf and stuck them on the V8 box. A bit of mucking around, but certainly possible.
If you buy a 1UZ from a Crown which has a seperate tranny controller to the engine ECU then you may be able to swap bell housing's over and use the entire Surf gearbox. You would then need use the Surf tranny controller(ECT) to control the gearbox. There maybe some speed sensor issues too.
As for the sump. I can't answer that sorry. Good luck.

From what I have heard and don't quote me on this but the 1UZ needs to be rear sumped in order to not interfere with the IFS.
I looked into doing the same thing with my surf but discovered that the Holden 3.8 V6 was a much cheaper conversion.
Oh and apparently you cannot register a 1UZ in a 89 - surf in QLD.
as I said this is what I was told when I was looking to do the conversion so I cannot say if it is true or not.

I have just embarked on this project myself. Mine is a 1987 T/d. I have the 1uz sitting on the floor at home, just waiting for the gearbox to be modified.
Why would you not get it regoed? Correct me if I am wrong, but the new QLD laws go on a power to weight ratio. Since the 4wd is over 1.5t, the 190kW should not be a problem. Also, the 4wd have fairly large brakes. I have spoken to a mate who is a certifier, and he said as long as you have ALL the emission controls off the 'donor' vehicle (read, fact comp, charcol can, cat ect) it should not be a prob.
If anyone has differing opinions, please let know.
Cheers.

I'm kinda halfway through the conversion. I'm getting Venom in brisbane to do my wiring loom and he also sourced me my motor and flywheel. He has done a 4runner with IFS before and told me to get a front sump motor to clear the IFS. I've also got a 2" bodylift which will allow a little more room for the sump if the motor is mounted as high as possible.
It is also fine to be registed in QLD.
I'm hoping to have mine finished in about 4 weeks time.

Nah, I've never been going to do a 308 conversion, I was just about to turbo my std. V6 (only the exhaust manifold to do) but my v6 shit itself due to a dodgy tune of the engine management, so I'm putting the lexus V8 in instead of rebuilding and turbo'ing my V6. It works out cheaper to drop the V8 in as well.
