Auto to manual ?

Post by J Top »

Drowned a TJ last month, after flushing the motor, auto, transfer and diffs at least twice each, found the computor kaput. Finally sourced a new comp and got it going, drove about 30kms to have the auto die.
Can any one tell me where to find a manual and if it is a bolt in swap, will I have to tell lies to the computor, will it bolt to the auto transfer, are the shafts the same length etc etc.
Or do I just spend the $$$$$$$$ and rebuild the sludge box till next time.
Any and all information appreciated.

It won't quite bolt straight up, but it is supposed to be a relatively easy swap.
A better move might be to go with an AW4 auto out of an XJ cherokee.
It is 4 speed, lower geared than the 3 speed TJ auto and generally a very good tranny.

Heaps of info here on the AW4 swap:

I would suggest the jeep section of pirate4x4 for technical details on the manual swap. Better have a thick skin though because they only like really heavy technical posts :)

If you do rebuild the current auto then assuming its a 3 speed you may want to move the breather............... if you haven't already
